You see lots of older cars running around and in good condition. makes me think that many people are keeping theirs for years. My longest was a Volvo 240 estate at 5 years, whats yours?

18 months and 30k miles - February 1996 Peugeot 406 1.9 TD LX, bought at 96k in July 2004.

I'm on my sixth car in six years of car ownership. Current one is my first brand new car though, so we'll see what happens with this one - I can't see me getting rid of it within two years, nor keeping longer than four.

Citroen BX 19TGD Estate. Bought in 1993 at 2yrs/48k. Scrapped April 2005 at approx 180K after filing MOT on steering rack and numerous advisories. Only engine problems were a couple of glow plugs.

Otherwise, usual round of brakes, a clutch and one complete set of suspension spheres. Biggest job was replacement of rear trailing arm bearings at about 5yrs/80k.

A good and faithfull servant.

My dads 93 Astra auto estate ( rare model when new as was expensive at nearly £14k ) has been in our family since it was new, first belonging to my grandfather, then passing to my dad when he died. Still going strong clocking up 2-3k a year as the run-around. So thats 15 years and counting.

I'm ashamed to say two and a half years. Vx Belmont 1.8 CD auto (the posh one :) ). Averaged about 18 months since I started driving in 1986. Determined to do better with my current jalopy.

Going through my mother's attic the other week I came across a box full of my Dinky and Corgi cars dating from as early as 1958 but with a load of stuff from the early '60s. Included in this were highlights such as the "James Bond" DB5 and the "Man from Uncle" Oldsmobile. A very nice Citroen Safari an E-Type a Ford GT40.................etc etc.

Don't suppose these count though ! ;-)

Did think about it MLC. However, I made the mistake of showing them to my eight year old son and he thinks they are "well cool" .............maybe he'll sell them one day. He might get a gallon of petrol with the proceeds!

My first car - 2003 - 2005. Only owned the others for about a year before selling. only have motorbikes now.

That poor little Fiesta was the embodiment of the saying "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!"

I bought a Ford Sierra 2.3 petrol Ghia in 1983. I sold it in 2001 after 18 years of very good service and 150,000 miles to a friend, who used it for a couple of years before the police pulled him up for a bit of bodywork sticking out.
A brilliant car!

Just as an aside - I have decided to conduct a longevity experiment with one of my current cars. The one I use for work and which does a very high annual mileage, is an 02 Ford Mondeo Ghia X TDCI Estate manual. It is not all that old yet but has reached 140k without any problems at all. It doesn't creak, rattle, smoke or use oil. It still gets close to the manufacturers stated economy figures, the seats and trim are fine and the bodywork is in excellent condition with only an odd stone chip to show for its' hard work. I bought it three years ago when it had very low mileage and I have racked up the rest. Normally, I tend to sell my cars on at this sort of stage, but I have become strangely fond of this one and now want to see how far it will go. I am mentally and financially prepared to pamper it and have set myself an initial target of 300k. I have been fortunate enough to have either owned, or had the use of, some very nice and allegedly more upmarket / better quality cars over the years but this one has just been remarkable. It genuinely has not had any non-scheduled work ever. ( if you don't count the replacement headlamp bulb about a while ago ) Because of my highish usage, I normally budget to allocate £8-£10k every couple of years or so, to car purchase costs, so it will be interesting to see if what some call the bangernomics theory really works. Just for info. while in my care it has always been properly serviced, albeit at a local indy and I try where possible to fuel it with branded rather than supermarket diesel although I accept that may just be my superstition. I wiill keep you posted on.... ahem..... "Betsy's" progress.

Drive safely tomorrow everyone. I've got a very early start to be in Scotland for the week. Apparently I may not need to use the engine due to the forecast strength of the southerlies!

Got her in 1990, finally had to scrap her in 2000, 10 years may not sound that much but she was an Austin Metro!!
Reckon she cost me £1000 over the ten years, that includes tyres and exhausts, wouldnt happen nowerdays with modern motors though, er indoors' Pug has cost that in 3 years.

6 years for me, I wouldn't go that long again with the same car.

However for some time I've been toying with the idea of buying a 1998 V8 Jaguar Sovereign and keeping it for the rest of my life. You know, just for weekends in Summer, to roll out and wax, and smother it with love and kisses and drive it very slowly around the village and take it home again. Unfortunately wifey has prioritised this below putting a door on the upstairs bathroom, paving the driveway, putting up a garden fence and and building a little house for the damned wheelie-bin so I can't see it being this year.

Cars: The Citroen Visa Convertible sat in the garage which we've had almost 7 years. Only been on the road 6 weeks in that time mind... Of cars I've actually run, longest is a BX TD that I had for 4 years and did 70k in - wish I hadn't sold it when I did.

Motorbikes: I now have a 1929 Velocette Model U. This was bought by my Grandad in about 1938, and I inherited it in 2000 after he died. Mind you, that hasn't been on the road since 1953!!

Peugeot 305 estate, 'C' reg.- bought with 47K on the clock, finally scrapped 16 yrs. later at 279K, the last 5K with a reconditioned 'short' engine due to bore wear. Slowly increasing rear suspension toe-out finished the old girl off. Sadly missed...

Guess we must be a long term family
Commer 21 years and counting (and SWMBO's dad had it for the 12 years before that).
SWMBO's current Golf bought new in 2001 replaced her first golf bought 1988 and finally sold after both sons had used it as their first car in 2006.
I get my new car fix with a new company car every 4 years.

Swmbo bought her Peugeot 106 in 1993 - new - and we still have it.

Her previous car was another Mini Estate - she sold that after 5 years.

we've had our 12 year old Civic 1.5 VTEC for 8 years - twice as long as any other car we've ever owned. In fact we've changed our other car four times while we've had it. I'm sick of the sight of it but it seems silly to sell it when it sails through every MOT and never breaks down.

The Rover P4 has been around long enough for me to have transported both daughter and grandaughter, strapped in their respective child car seats, can't say how many years ownership because I'm still counting, 35 years up to now. If I can hang on another 5 years or so, and the MOT tester mellows, I might also get a great-grandaughter to put in there, now that would be something ;-)

More prosaically, I've had my '86 Volvo for over well ten years now......

Just as well for the car industry that not everyones like me.......

I bought a tidy 111,000 mile Y plate Sierra 1.6L complete with slipping clutch in 1993 for £400. Put a clutch in it, and ran it for 5 years and took it up to 190,000 miles during which time I changed a head gasket, water pump, two sets of TCA bushes and an ignition coil. SWMBO used it as a stopgap for a year after her mk2 Astra got nicked and destroyed, but never got on with it, and sold it to a friend a year later for £250. He ran it until 2002 when the engine blew up at 230,000 miles with oil pump failure (we think). Oil light on, DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR noise, and seized solid. Bodywork was going by that point, so it went to the scrappie. Every moving part inside that engine was original, and certainly when we passed it on at just over 190k, it still only used about half a litre of oil between changes (done every 6k religiously since I got it, and always with a genuine Motorcraft filter).

TTX366Y. I still miss you.

My dad had his L reg Mondeo ten years (bought ex-fleet and sold to a neighbour's son last year). Still going - turns up every few weeks, and now well over 200k.

Cheers

Never managed more than three!

Mk 1 Fiesta - 18 months - fell apart, but it was 20 years old.
Mk 3 Fiesta 1.1 - 2.5 years - 60,000 miles and it was beginning to use more oil than petrol - handed back to finance company
Mk3 Fiesta diesel - 2 years - cambelt went, had it fixed then sold on at 75,000 miles
Focus - nearly three years - just shy of 60,000, drivers seat was collapsing then it was hit while parked. Had it fixed then traded.
A2 - 2.5 years - wanted a change
A3 2.0TDi 140 - 2 years - wanted a change
A3 2.0TDI 170 - 9 months - looking at what will be next!

smart - 2 years, traded for a cabrio
smart cabrio - 2 years, handed back after end of PCP

The long term keeper will probably be the Aygo as it is doing low mileage and should be cheap to fix in years to come.

Like Steptoe, my father has had his P4 Rover all of my life (I just rolled through 9 / 36 two weeks ago) - it was his father's before that (though I am pretty sure he did not have it from new in 1963).

It took us on family holidays - icecreams sat on the running board - has bumpers that absorbed impact, and could be removed and knocked back in to shape, and each year it passes its MOT with few problems.

During the late 70's, it was laid up for a bit (petrol was something silly like 50p a gallon), but in the end I think a decision was taken that it was 'up or out' for it, and so it was put back on the road.

It is still in use, at about 1,000 miles per annum, but Dad's view is that it is cheaper to run than take a taxi for the few occasions he needs to go somewhere different to my Mum. With free road tax, classic car insurance, and DIY maintenance, he is probably right.

At one time, I was desperate to own it and be the third generation of my family to use it. I am now resigned to the fact that given the lack of space and time I have, it will just be the Registration number that I take on, and maybe the rear seat for my office...

Both longest and second longest are my current transport.

A Chevy Z28 I've owned since new in '96 and shipped back from Texas with me.

A '99 XJ8 that I bought in 2003.

Up until now I've always kept cars for 2 or perhaps 3 years at the most, but neither of these two have given me any reason to want to change them. The Z28 is perfect for burning rubber or just pootling around at weekends. The XJ is used for commuting and I can't think of anything better suited to the job except maybe a Daimler Super V.
