Lets discuss family divergence
Okay I have a 02 Focus, and my old fella has a 02 Vectra.
So we both have pretty boring mainstream cars
So what about you and your family?
Prizes for the biggest delta??

I have a 51 plate BMW 530.
My Dad has a 51 plate BMW 530
Do I lose by the biggest margin? :(
|
I have a 2000 mk2 Mondeo diesel
My dad has a 1998 Discovery 300TDI
They run on the same fuel and have links to the same manufacturer. Erm, that's about it
Cheers

I've found myself driving similar cars to my Father 3 times in the last 10 years or so.
We both had A4s (the original shape) in the late '90s, though his was a 1.8T and mine a lowly TDI; a few years later we were both driving B6 A4s, both TDI 130s, though his was and SE saloon and mine a 'Sport'(!) Avant. Most recently we both had (or in his case still has...) an E61 525d Touring, though again his is an SE and mine was an M Sport.
What's also interesting is that I seem to change my car every 18 months - 2 years; his stay for around 4 years...
At the moment he still has his 525d Touring, and I have an A4 Convertible...I'm not sure that he approves ;-)

I'm almost as bad as MichaelR.
Me - Subaru Outback 3.0Rn
Dad - Subaru Forester XT AWP (which I used to drive).
Boringly reliable - yes
Boring - No!!
|
Me = BMW 320DSE
My father = Toyota Corrolla (a KE72 for anoraks amongst us).
Both cars are rear wheel driven and have A/C - the similarities end there!
The age difference between the cars is 18 years, our age difference is about double that. And we live in two different countries.
Do I get the prize now?

I've got a Kia Pride.
Daughter's got an MX5.
|
SWMBO has a hilux, i've got a 124 merc coupe, youngsters have a impreza ra and a 320td compact.
Strangely enough the youngsters and us wouldn't want to swap.
Espada, i need to be talked out of my present feelings, i'm considering selling my merc and getting a legacy 3.0 saloon (05 or 55). Feel the need to update but merc can't compare to subaru for reliability, nothing to do with being able to dump all that torque on the road with no slipping or sliding you understand.
|
Message for gordonbennet....
Gordon. You don't want to be talked out of buying a Subaru 3.0. It has an incredibly smooth engine with a lovely wail as you go higher up the rev range to the redline of 7,000rpm. There is no torque steer or wheel spin and reliability is second to none. I can't think of anything that has gone wrong with the three we have had, except the first one needed an aircon re-gas as my father didn't use it.
As you are coming out of a coupe, you will not notice the lack of rear legroom for the size of car and I would recommend the Outback purely for ease of access and ingress - its couple of inches higher than the mainstream Legacy, and I don't notice any particular lack of handlig prowess compared to lower saloons I have driven.
As I only do 9,000 miles pa, the lack of good economy doesn't worry me. Urban driving can be as bad as 18mpg, but a 70mph motorway cruise easily beats 30mpg. I went up the Lakes last week and got about 24mpg, but I was cruising late at night with a couple of big engined Audis at about 110mph on the way up and 80mph on the way down. The car was just perfect and felt totally planted on the road.
Hope that helps!

Espada.....
Thanks for that i think, as you are confirming what i didn't want to know, and now i definately want one, so now i've got about 7 grand to find.
TBH. i know the economy isn't great but then my lovely old E320 coupe average's 25 so i'm used to it (actually its a 96 and one of last made and very lovely to drive and be inside, mushroom leather and dark wood, ruby red body, very enjoyable and only done 70K)
Lack of rear legroom isn't really a problem for us as if we have any rear seat passengers we use the hilux (the new ones are surprisingly comfortable), but it would be nice to have 4 doors again.
I had thought about the outback, but i really like the overall neatness of the saloon, so i suppose i'll have to find a test drive now to confirm i really want one (i've driven my sons impreza ra once and that was once too often, never experienced anything quite so brutal or rough or terrifying in my life). Pity there's no outback saloon, bet there is in OZ.
When, (not if thanks to you) i get one it will be auto, i just hope its as nice a box as the merc has.
As you are in the know, there is one on autotrader at the mo,one owner blue with cream leather, auto, 05reg 26k for £12K, that sounds good to me and its not a spec B. I want a comfortable ride not pallett truck suspension, so do i need to avoid the spec B anyway.
Many thanks anyway, and humble apologies for a terrible thread hijacking.
In fact would the mods prefer if i started a thread instead.
Regards all.

There has been some comment about the ratio gaps in the auto box, but you only notice them if using the tiptronic manually. Works perfectly well though.
My Outback has done 22,000 miles in 14 months when i bought it and it still drives like new at 34,000 miles a further 15 months later. If you want a smooth ride go for the highest profile tyred car you can find (presumably not the Spec B) and the price you are paying seems reasonable for the 3.0 although I think you can get nearly new 4-cyl models for not much more.
I would also like a saloon Outback, but I'm happy for the time being.
|
Thanks Espada, i know you can get newer, but i want that smooth engine and i absolutely refuse to pay the £400 rip off tax for band G after March 06.
Don't know if i dare go and look at that one in Yorkshire as i'm likely to come home with it, impulsive blighter that i am.
Thanks for your advice, will be comparing notes in the not too distant i hope.

I've a new Panda 4x4, my dad has a Mazda 2. However, as he is 80 and has a vascular dementia he's not fit to drive and we are curently fighting to find a resolution for this. I don't wish to shop him to DVLA but I had a word with his psychiatrist who has arranged an assessment of his driving which will be really great. He lives in Carlisle and the nearest asessment centre is in Newcastle-upon-Tyne but I will move Heaven and Earth to get him there.
As I'm an oldie, my kids drive the fancy motors and I drive the cheap but practical ones. Really much more fun.

My Dad's first car (he's now driving on the big racetrack in the sky) was a Rolls Royce 20/25. My first car was a Mk1 Capri which had a hole in the passenger's footwell - wellies needed in the wet...
|
My father had a 1932 RR 20/25 limousine (ex coupe de ville with its pram arrangement sealed shut and jump seats, no boot but a grille you could strap trunks to) in the late fifties and early sixties.
Later I had a 1953 Bentley R Type, with his kind encouragement.
All I can say is that he treated his a lot better than I treated mine, although he used to adulterate its petrol with paraffin to show off the low compression ratio. When he swopped it for a new series 1 Cortina 1200 he tried to give it to the local parish priest, whom he liked although not himself a Catholic. That was near Dunfermline in Fife. But the bishop forbade the poor man to have it feeling it would send the wrong signals to the faithful. He later told me he had thought of giving it to me, but decided against. In retrospect I can only agree that he was right, although I was a bit annoyed at the time (only a bit, not berserk with rage as I would have been if he had told me that when he actually got rid of the car).

I too have mixed feelings about my late fathers vehicle disposals.
When i was 14 he GAVE yes GAVE away his beautiful 1948 velocette 350 single (air forks), when we moved from Herts to Kent, i was broken hearted as i wanted desperately to have that bike when i came of age.
TBH he probably did me a favour as at least i'm still here to complain bitterly about it.
So if you or your dad are/was a mechanic at waters of Hertford in the 60's and gained a lovely old motorcycle for nowt, i'm never going to forgive you.
Don't be back calculating ages now.
Think i started turning grey then.

He may have a point, but where as he's 53. i'm 22...
|
He cruises about looking down his nose at the traffic, Sunny, while you hurtle chubbily about staring it in the eye, not so?
|
Haha very true! Might sort him some grand kids out soon to make his even more practical!

My father bought a 6 month old Vectra 1.8. I inherited a 6 year old Vectra 1.8. I now drive a 9 year old Vectra 1.8...
Do I lose by a bigger margin than MichaelR? Or does the 8.5 year difference make a difference?
|
|
My dad hated cars - ending up with a clio auto before he died.
I've got an 8 year old Primera
My son's got a 3 month old Infiniti FX 35 - which he's already trading for a Range Rover Sport.
At least we're going in the right direction :-)
|
I have a Volvo S80 and at 83 Dad now has a Jazz CVT. Dad was slightly older than I am now when he had his first big Volvo, can't help wondering if that means I'm heading for a Jazz CVT if they still make them in 30 odd years time!
