Does anybody have any ideas on how to stop the local male cats from peeing on the front of my new Golf. I understand that they are marking their territory but its leaving marks on my front bumper and engine grill

Subject line altered to reflect the type of cats that we're talking about ! - PU
{on a related theme, the subject header needed another 'p' adding. Also dropped the make of car as I'm sure cats can cock their leg up on any car and not just Golfs - DD}

Orange peel can be put around your car or pepper deters the cats from making their marks.
But I've never heard of any products that can be used for this solely.

I thought this post was about you having a problem with a "cat". Maybe the cat doesnt like that cat on your car?

We have some stuff my girlfriend bought called Silent Roar; I've never used it myself though. Just searched online and found out that it contains essence of lion manure!
I thought you could sprinkle some on the drive if you always park in a particular place. I've no idea if it would work but it sounds effective?

ISTR seeing it in several DIY stores/ garden centres..

If you can get close enough use a super soaker water gun. They may get the connection. I do not advocate any lasting harm to cats.

cant you lie in wait and give it a blast from a garden hose, or better still a jet washer next time it comes around, that may make it think twice about doing it again

There's a spray called 'cat off' you can get from pet shops. Keeps mine off the sofa. I guess you'd have to reapply it each time you washed the car though.

BB guns are unPC these days, but garlic seems to work, I always used chopped fresh garlic, but you can by large cheap tubs of garlic flakes or powder from cash and carries and such places.

I love cats so I wouldn't advocate anything nasty. But I agree spraying water at them is a good deterrent. If you live close to a road be careful that suddenly scaring a cat doesn't cause it to run in the road - cats usually run for home when scared.

I like the logic with this stuff - you want to stop them marking their territory, so you mark it yourself..... Mmm!

Water works but only temporarily - neuter the cat?!
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - Manatee
You need to get there first and mark the territory yourself.

Of course it's just possible that it has nothing to do with territory and the peccant feline was once hit by one of Wolfsburg's finest, and is getting its own back. Was your previous car targeted?
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - mike hannon
Maybe you should just buy something else that appeals to the cat? ;-)

We have one of these in the garden and it's guaranteed to keep cats off. Not very cheap but it really works. (We didn't get it from this site and paid a bit less than they are showing.)

I'm led to believe that Australians hang corks on their hat brims to prevent kangaroos doing exactly this while they sleep off 15 tinnies in the shadow of Ayer's Rock. Perhaps a 'skirt' of corks on strings could be applied to this car. I doubt it would work, but I expect the project would prove a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Male/tom cats can be thick in my opinion. We had a few cats and the only one we now have is female, about aged 13 and really smart, cunning and manipulative. Her son was thick ;-) He died from a blocked apendage causing kidney damage. Swear filter might let me say what the appendage was it seems.

So my point....

Since his demise (a tom cat) we got other cats coming in so a locking cat flap needed. One is persistent and very thick. He is now really scared of me. Once when in and I found him he poo'd himself instantly! But he still comes in the house when the cat flap is open.

So sprays might work but threats might not.

Can you not run 12 volts to the engine grille or are they all plastic these days?

Why not stick a picture of Barry Manilow or Bruce Forsyth on the bumper - that's bound to frighten them away.......:>)
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - whoopwhoop
Wait for offending feline to approach the brum brum, then give it the good news by hitting the panic button on the alarm keyfob.

The noise will surely petrify the cat into never returning!

Put a BIG dog in the car.

Or sprinkle the bonnet with pepper...

I hope you are not a ticket holder making that suggestion - domestic animals are not game no matter what.

No, they aren't, you are right.

Game is hare, pheasant, deer, ducks, grouse, woodcocks, partridges.....
Vermin is rabbits, pigeons, rooks, foxes - etc.

However, this is going rather off the "motoring" subject.
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - madf
As cats are not protected in law.. (but cruelty is illegal) iirc, then shooting cats is I believe legal on your own land with an airgun. On other's land without their permission, illegal.

Personally I love cats..but they eat birds. They can eat as many mice as they like... but birds?

Cover the bonnet with grease strewn paper: cats hate grease on their paws...

Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - simmybear
Why not go the whole hog and grease the car entirely - excellent for stopping rust - does make the windows a bit smeary though!

An alternative might be to paint the car all over with that black spiky anti-climbing paint. Would have the added advantage of giving it the fashionable rat look.
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - Rats
Two possible solutions, save up some of your own urine, and pour that around your property boundary where they enter, or near the car. Or more radical, go and pee on the car of the cat's owner and see how they like that :-)

As an alternative, why not supply the cat with a more attractive place to rest?
A flower bed with catmint, hot and cold milk and running mice would do nicely.

Pellets and other strong smelling repellents have little if any effect on male cats marking practices. They will still want to spray to mark their position and leave a scent of themselves for other tom cats.

A modern alternative is something called Feliway. It's a pheromone spray which is odourless to people but is something that male cats detect. The idea at least in homes where there is a spraying problem, is to spray daily about a foot off the ground, concentrating on protruding areas and corners. I see no reason why this should not work on cars.

The spray makes cats think they have already marked the area so preventing or reducing further marking. I find it works better in theory than practice, but some of my clients have reported a complete success with this method. It is only, I believe, available at vets.

Hope that helps, might be worth a try. Probably costs around £16 a bottle though ;)

I understand lion urine deters domestic cats and dogs.

Great marketing opportunity for someone with the right connections.

'£45 per 75cl. bottle... cheaper than Dom Perignon!'

A development on the "Super Soaker" idea....

Put chilli powder in the water. Fire this at the offending cat. Cat will lick this off and will be comfortable. However, the next time it licks its ring it will get the message. :)
Stopping (pussy) cats 'marking' my car - hugopogo
Imagine the danger money you'd need to pay the fella who drives around Knowsley Safari Park with a funnel and a milk bottle though.

We got a product called 'Get Off' from Pets @ Home which we had some success with to stop our cats scratching at the door when we'd put them in their room at night... Might work for this problem too? They do it in a gel form (mainly for gardens and lawns) and a spray bottle.

Never had much luck with lemon juice but the rind for oranges usually sends them running if we're eating in the lounge. Not particularly practical to stick orange rind to your car though.

In my experience water sprays are usually only a temporary deterant. But fun.

Most cats I see actively torment dogs.

As an aside - farmers are allowed to shoot dogs worrying sheep on their land. Does that mean that if some sheep escape and ruin your garden you can open fire?

How about a conductive mat in front of the car connected to the + pole of the battery and a length of conductive tape along the grill connected to the - pole. Cat pees, circuit completed.

We have five cats - all French. Three are outside cats, two are house cats. The three are from the same mother, two boys and a girl the other two are not. All five we brought up from kittens.

Both the two boys and the girl will spray-mark their territory, our garden etc, but never go near either of our vehicles.

But, all five have the same horror of one thing - the sound of aluminium cooking foil being handled to line the cooker grill pan. As soon as they hear it they bolt away from the sound out of the "cooking room" into the lounge and hide, I've no idea why. It's not the sight of it, it's the sound, but could this be the solution to your problem? Aluminium foil hanging somewhere around the front of your car?

Thank goodness you provided a prompt reply to the question.

What on earth made you reply to such an old thread? Or was it brought to the list of current threads by a spam post that has since been deleted? I knew someone who had a Rhodesian ridgeback that would mark its territory, which included weeing on peoples shoes ...

back in the days of mg montego turbos... a friends car always had next doors cat sleep on the bonnet. until the day he picked up his new montego turbo, and apparently the turbo routinely turned the bonnet extremely hot. anyway poor cat tried its usual trick and got burnt, never to sleep on a car bonnet again...
