2.0 16V Fuel Economy - teddybear
Just purchased A 2004 C5 2.0 16V with 30K on clock. I have only done about 100 Miles but fuel economy seems lower than i thought at about 28 MPG.

My drive to work of 15 miles each way is country roads and i hardly ever sit in traffic. I have so far used a very light foot and am not driving really hard. I have checked the air filter and it is a little dirty but nothing excessive. The lamba sensor prints from the MOT give a 1.009 i think so this looks okay. Car has not been properly serviced since 27/03/06 at 17,295 miles. I know garage fitted new rear brake pads before they sold it so they say. Oil looks fairly clean etc. Does it just need a good service. If so i may book into Voiture Technique Services in Warwick. A specialist Citroen small garage.

Otherwise the car drives and runs fine, no roughness i can see. A little rattle on acceleration from idle but i think one of the steel exhaust shield baffles maybe vibrating (a cheap fix)

A average fuel economy of any other C5 2.0 petrol would be nice.

My old Xsara 1.8 which had 101K on it did more than that. Strnage the quoted MPG are the same for both cars.

Citroen C5 2.0 16V Fuel Economy - ForumNeedsModerating
Is that a long enough mileage to come to a conclusive answer on mpg? If derived from the on-board trip computer, it must surely include bits of testing, revving the engine & general 'getting to know' the car stuff. If calculated using the 'brim-to-brim' methodology, over 100 miles a small discrepancy in your 'brim' point would be sigifigant & possibly misleading too.

I guess it may not be long although it was calculated by using the BRIM method and not the fuel computer as i know they are really bad at estimating the fuel consumption. It has also been rather cold the last few days. Just the fuel gauge seemed to be moving very quickly which is why i filled it back to a full tank to check the MPG. I do have a longer journey this weekend of about 100 miles to do. Guess maybe i might just have to average over a month or so to see how it goes.

No direct experience of the C5 but they are a big, heavy vehicle for a 2 litre motor to pull around. For the time of year, and on give & take roads, late 20s sounds reasonable.

I'm sure you'd get a fair bit more on a m/way cruise.

If it's any help I've got a 2l 16v Xantia petrol and it averages about 33mpg with the same sort of driving as your C5, country roads, little traffic etc. I achieve about 35/36 on a long run.

I check with the brim to brim method but don't bother to work it out to fractions.

Well if the latest fuel gauge is anything to go by i have now used a quarter of a tank to do 60 miles. With a 66 Litre tank a quarter seems a lot to me.

Oh well guess i have to keep monitoring it.

Ive got a 2006 C5 2 litre petrol, but its an Automatic so you should be able to match or better my results.
Short journeys with cold engine on freezing mornings = 25 mpg.(if im lucky)
Similar thing but summer weather = 29 mpg
Typcal country crusing = 34 mpg
Did 200 miles back from Kent on Wednesday up the M25 / M1 etc and the comp said 40.5mpg (which for a big heavy petrol car with an auto box is brilliant in my opinion)
BTW, ive found the trip computer to be very accurate.

Friend of mine has a 52 plate 2.0l C5 petrol -- she thought she was doing 40mpg but knowing the type of driving she does I asked for a few more details and it came out at just under 30mpg, so 28 seems about right!

My 98 Xsara Coupe 1.8 16v VTR gets between 35-40 mpg depending on how its driven so i would say that 28mpg from a bigger, heavier more powerful car is probably about right.

Thankyou for the replies (its been really helpful) , still averaging about 28mpg even after Journey up the motorway.

Guess i will decide over the next few days wether i will keep the car. Guess for the short term i will but in the long term may change to a diesel.

If i decide not to keep not sure what i will choose.
