hi,i have recently aquired the cv off a friend.i put jump leads to it with a new battery too, still wont start.so i towed iyt and she fired up and purred like a kitten.shes been stood for a year.
the only thing ive noticed now is that i have to put a jump lead to the engine just to get it to slighlty turn over.
when i do this she turns as if the battery was dying, just a couple of turns then nothing.
i left a small lead attached and it melted it straight away.
when i was connecting the earth to the engine i could hear a relay somewhere clicking?????
im lost when it comes to electrics???can you help me??

Earth leads corroded somewhere between engine/gearbox and body or battery and body. Take off and clean or replace.
When you say you put a jump lead to the engine, do you mean between the negative earth battery terminal and the engine 'metal'? Same thing with the lead that melted?

Something's niggling in my memory about a gearbox earth-strap corrosion problem on these?

yes i put an earth lead from the negative battery terminal straight to the engie,,if i wa to do this on a petrol it would earth correctly, but on a diesel is it different??im a proper petrol head, ive never done any work on a diesel,it ran sweet as a nut once i bumped it with the lead attached, but now it just melts it when i connect it and try starting the car???will it definitly be the earth on the gearbox causing this problem?cheers for your response

It's no different on a diesel, the current through the starter motor needs to get back to the battery somehow.
You'll need to find the earth leads, check they're still attached, clean and replace as appropriate if they're damaged. Follow Screwloose's suggestion and look at the gearbox end first.
The jump lead won't deliver enough current owing to it not being a pernament connection and the lead not having enough cross-section. You could try doubling them up I suppose.

ive replaced te earth strap with a new lead and cleaned up the connections, theres still nothing there though, just as if its lazy at starting

Is the battery still good? All this sitting/starting/ignition on whilst you play about might have discharged it.
Try in the following order:
Charging battery.
Supplementing earth connection from engine/gearbox to chassis with jump leads.
Jump starting car from battery to another car.
... Let us know which works.

hi,iv checked all the connections under the bonnet, battery good and i found the culprit, being as you said the earth strap to the gearbox from the chassis,it looked fine but as soon as i tried to remove it it fell to pieces.i connected a good jump lead to the bolt on the gearbox straight to the negative on the battery and she fired up instantly!!cheers for all your help with it.

Almost certainly bad earthing between block and body. Shouldn't be too hard to spot.

check the lead from g/box to chassis. nearside front wheel area, there is a stud on g/box end case, the chassis lead is made off weaved copper and is prone to corrosion replace with a heavy cable available from a motor factor designed to do the job, to small risk of fire etc, etc,
