hi, i have a 98 vectra 2.0 di dtl which starts and drives, but runs lumpy when cold and will not rev above 2,500 rpm, when the engine management light light comes on.i have replaced fuel filter, leak off pipes, maf sensor.Took it to a garage for diagnostic check and they tell me pump has a fault.Curious thing is though is i drove through a deep puddle last week and afterwards normal performance returned [revving fully no light on] but next day back to poor running,do you think ishould try a crank sensor?. also told mechanic puddle story and he said "probably a coincidence"????.does smoke excessively when cold and when it hits rev ceiling[2,500 ish], let revs drop down and eml goes off any thoughts much appreciated, thanks alan.

Took it to a garage for diagnostic check and they tell me pump has a fault.
That was precise. It's going into limp-home for a reason; what was the exact code number?
|
dont remember, did not get a printout will try to see them next weekend,im pretty sure he mentioned it was showing crank sensor as well as maf open circuit but thats cos i changed maf sensor.also mentioned timing chain could have slipped????which i thought was unlikely.

It sounds as though your garage is flannelling hard because they really haven't got a clue.
Try taking it to a diesel specialist.

sounds very much like an air leak, there is a vac pump on the end of the camshaft , first check, is oil level okay, then you will need to check very carefully all the vac pipes for splits leaks connections etc these go to the turbo via valves, to the throttle body and the heating system, quiet a complex system but needs 100% air tight a small leak will cause a big problem

didn't make it to garage yesterday as had to get car for wife. just checked all vac pipes and connections, couldn't find any holes/splits.if the vacuum pump is working should i be able to feel any suction when i cover the bottom connector [small 1 where pipes run off],with my finger as i felt no pressure.also are the vac solenoids meant to be making a buzzing noise?. took for a run still wont rev over 2,500rpm .however under no load revs to 3,000 ish plumes of white/blue smoke, slight misfire, strong smell of diesel.have cleaned and checked egr valve.did check oil and water for contamination seems clear.once again any thoughts much appreciated.

white smoke burning water
blue smoke oil passing rings, guides or stem seals
more blue smoke in morning

has this vehicle been through some deep water/puddles ?

I had a similar problem on my company Vectra - same model.
Spent a fortune checking and replacing various sensors etc. Waste of money.
Eventually the problem was found to be the catalytic converter , if inners have collapsed it could be blocked causing backpressure , rough running and the the sort of problems you are having.....
Give it a shake - if it sounds like a biscuit tin full of broken glass then theres your problem.

last time it went through a deep puddle{2ft} IT CAME OUT THE OTHER SIDE AND NORMAL PERFORMANCE WAS RESTORED{REVVING RIGHT ROUND CLOCK} but left it overnight and back to eml on and running rough.this makes me think electronic prob am gonna try a new crank sensor as this and oil level sensors are in positions where they would have got splashed.thanks.

my mistake just re-read the first post re the puddle dought if it had any bearing on the fault do youi have any codes relating to this problem
|
did take it 2 garage told me it could be several things{see previous post} but no printout and cant remember any no's its the restored performance after the puddle incident that throws me,surely if the pumps failed it wouldn't start?also the vac pump lack of suction on the lower connector {where pipes run to solenoids etc}is to be investigated.

Same model..same year. Exactly the same problems and it was the CAT as helicoptor mentions above.
