My B & SiL are visiting later this year from Australia, doing a round the world trip and spending some time in various locations, including 2 or 3 months in the UK. We have a "spare" car in the family, my mother's old L reg Peugeot 106 diesel - ancient but very sound - and thought it might be a nice idea to lend it to them. I am having great trouble in arranging short term insurance. The vehicle is not normally insured, it is just borrowed by family members whenever they need a car and swapped to their regular insurance, hence it is not possible to include BiL as a named driver. I have telephoned and searched the net and found various possibilities but hidden in the small print is usually "australian licence holders excluded" or some such thing. He is English and does have a very old UK licence, having been in Aus over 30 years, and as a late 50s aussie civil servant with no convictions it is hardly likely to be deathrace when he is over here. I did speak to one broker who would offer insurance if it was a campervan, but not a car! I have thought of taking out insurance in my name and including him as a named driver, still cheaper than car hire, but then he would be the primary driver and not me. Alternatively we could rely on his UK licence to arrange insurance in his name but I would not like to put that to the test in the unfortunate event of an accident. I would welcome any suggestions or tips as to what might be possible.

Thanks in advance, MGs

Check with the DVLA if his license is still valid. If its one of the green paper variety, and its not been revoked I suspect that legally he is still "legal" if you know what I mean.

Can he not insure the car on his own policy at home?

Excellent suggestions AE, I'll check both points. I'm beginning to think that if you factor in my time it is almost cheaper to hire.

Thanks MGs
