'A 31-year-old man is in hospital after he was struck by a car on the M61 motorway in Bolton.
The man was seen walking in the fast lane of the southbound carriageway, between the Bolton West Services and Horwich junction.
He was struck by a car as he tried to dodge the traffic, Greater Manchester Police said.
He suffered a fracture to his left leg, and was taken to a hospital where he is "stable".
The driver of the car was treated for shock..'
Not the first time we've read about the antics of pedestrians on our M-ways but when did we ever read about a successful prosecution based on them putting drivers lives at risk ?
A driver going about his lawful business is now trying to come to terms with an event we all dread- being involved in an accident.
|
How many cyclists do you see in court accused of causing accidents or breaking road traffic law?
Another bunch that get away scot free.
|
Any pedestrian found in /on the live lane of a motorway with out reasonable cause, should face a minimum 3 month jail sentence.
|
Without knowing the state of mind of the pedestrian in question it's a bit difficult to comment on what he might (or might not) have been guilty.
|
A secure unit then if not in full control.
Do you not think that drivers face enough hassle with out having to dodge around pedestrians on M-ways , whether they are there through criminal intent, stupidity or mental illness ?
I listened to a radio phone in once in which the caller had hit a pedestrian on the M57 at around 10 .30pm on a dark evening. he described how tis shape suddenly bounced off his bonnet and over his windscreen whilst he was traveling at 70 mph in the first lane.
He told how he slammed on his brakes and ended up on the hard shoulder. As he climbed from his car, other drivers where pulling up all around him and he remembers the shape in the road and the screeching of brakes.
He was calling after the inquest that revealed the pedestrian was one of many who used the M-way as a short cut between two estates.
He told how following his negative breath test he was taken from one police car to another and was aware of a police officer carefully examining his vehicle. His anger ( quiet rightly in my view ) was at the level of interview by the police. Where was he going, where had he been. Impounding of car for full vehicle check, questions about his eye sight.
What sort of country do we live in when the driver is automatically perceived as being at fault until proven other wise ?
|
So 2 cents you don't think a fatal accident is worth investigation?
Not only is enquiry/examination of the car driver carried to show if there was any blame on his part but also to negate any blame that may be alleged later i.e. that he was driving under influence (neg BT), eyesight was up to standard (eyesight test), vehicle 100% (tec exam of vehicle).
How would you feel as NoK deceased these checks had not been made?

As above. If at an inquest, the deceased's family point the finger
at you, the fact that the Police have conducted these investigations enable you to negate any unjust accusations. It's about proving innocence as well as guilt.
|
|
Agreed - except travelling on a supposedly pedestrian free road, you would expect the pedestrian to be as a minmum 50% responsible for any injury to his body, even if the driver was out of it on drugs and alcohol and the car a complete MoT failure.
|
You would Espada . Funny thing is, nobody tries to blame the train driver who hits a pedestrian crossing a railway line they shouldn't have been on.

|
Do you have a link to that story as I can't find it on the Bolton Evening News site
At least he is only hospitalised - had it proved fatal, I think he would be the third in five years in that part of the world
|
|
Maybe we should have "jaywalking" laws similar to those in some other countries.
|
I'd vote for that sir hiss. Frankly, the level of care shown by pedestrians when using our roads, streets and highways is , in my opinion , at an all time low.
As for walking in the fast lane of an M-Way, the person involved should be charged with attempted manslaughter as they are showing scant regard to the lives of drivers using a certain type of road from which pedestrians are banned.
