Two mates had their cars serviced last week, the first a 3 year old Renault Scenic with front discs and pads plus two tyres on top replaced was just about £1000. The BMW ''w'' 3 series came at £1300 ish with nothing major done. The Renault main dealers charged £200 for the tyres. Both blokes did not think the cost excessive, what do you think?

I had a service on my '02' 406HDi recently. Nothing major, but needed front pads and discs. IIRC, the cost in total was £300ish. I can get a decent tyre for £60 so that would make the total £420.

So yes, I think the cost is excessive in the case of the Renault and probably also in the case of the Beemer.

I've never had a service over £400 - for things like brakes and tyres I always go to independant suppliers as they're almost always cheaper (brake discs on my Type S cost twice as much from Honda as they did from EBC).

I have 2006 Mondeo ST TDCI and the services was as follows.

1st 12,500 service (adjusted handbrake free of charge)= £76.00 inc VAT
2nd 25,000 service = £132.50 inc VAT
3rd 37,500 (includng Aircon flush) service = £183.00 inc VAT

I would therefore conclude that the fee's were excessive.

06 Mondeo's should be due now for Brake fluid changes if not done already, according to service sheet. Did your one of your services include a fluid change?

Barney, where do your mates live? Prices seem stonkingly high compared with my Mondeo (familiar theme already in this thread). Here in the SW last big service (50k) at a Ford Dealer was £200 - half decent tyres through Black Circles are around £65 a corner.

Biggest bill we ever had for our 98 Scenic a few years back was a 72k service/MOT and cambelt change. Seem to recall this came to around £600. Thankfully the lease for the current G Scenic includes maintenance.

Seems to me for those prices they could have a weekend away to have the car serviced in cheaper locations and still have change.

Round the bend reply.
The Renault owner lives around Gatwick and the beemer is in Alton hants.
Massive snipquote!

The 36k "B" Service (major) on our Scenic was £260 inc VAT. It also needed two tyres which were quoted at £205, but I declined this and had the same tyres fitted (Michelin Energy) the next day at my usual supplier for £140.

Even if I'd had the tyres done there, that would have still meant the brakes (if they'd been needed) would have come nearly £550 to get to the £1,000 your man paid! Seems a heck of a lot to me.

Cheers

Outrageous prices. I live in Munich and the annual service for my previous car, an E46 BMW M3, used to cost around 250 Euros at the BMW owned main dealer. The annual service on my wife's Ford Ka costs around 150 Euros at the local Ford dealer. What did your mate's BMW dealer do for 1300 quid?

>>The BMW ''w'' 3 series came at £1300 ish with nothing major done.

This simply cannot be true.

I have had a variety of BMWs, our Sytner Leicester charges are in the range of

Oil service : £150
Inspection I : 200
Inspection II: 275 or so.

I even had an turbo replaced at the dealer for £1275.

£1000 to sevice a Renault? That seems extremely steep.

For that price I would want a cambelt change included.

Surely front discs and pads would amount to around £200 at dealer prices, same again for tyres, that means £600 for an oil and filter change!

It's called extortion.

Hi,

It isn't 2 years old until end of March and as I do significant mileage it will be done at the next service. So to answer your question no the brake fluid has not yet been changed.

Thanks for the input and most folks seem to agree that these boys have been taken for a financial ride. I see them both on monday and will pass on Brs comments.

Taken for a financial ride? Tell them they've been mugged!

I see them both on monday and will pass on Brs comments.

Why?

You said earlier they were both happy - why upset them? If one person is prepared to pay £1300 for BMW service then that gives the dealer some room to move when the next person wants it a bit cheaper.
Renault and BMW service, good value? - NARU
It all depends what was included - surely you can only tell if its expensive by looking through the invoice?

Lets face it, ANYONE - but anyone - who does not get competitive quotes for routine services - especially in affluent areas with lots of dealers - is fair game to a predatory dealership.
Anyone who lets a dealer carry out non standard work without a quote first is - how shall I put it politely? - open to predatory pricing.

(predatory pricing = bills over £500 and no non routine work done... UNLESS it's a premium car brand).

If you are so lazy or ignorant or rushed not to get a quote before you entrust anyone to do ANY work (cars, house etc) then imo you are open to being royally and truly overcharged.

It takes 5 minutes to make a phone call. The reurn on 3 calls in saved costs in the above examples would probably be several £100 so the hourly rate could be £1,000 per hour on the calls.

I'm glad so many people earn £1,000 + per hour so they don't bother. Not.

It's called financial common sense.

I was with a colleague discussing my wife's Aygo service which was cheaper at one dealer then the other, both part of same group but 11 miles apart.

His wife has a Pug 107 which is due a service so was interested in what we were quoted.

Another colleague was listening and said.

"I thought they all charged the same"

Unfortunately madf this is still a common misconception.
