- When starting my Peugeot 306 1.9TD Spinnaker, there is a slight 'cough' of white smoke from the exhaust! Immediately after this, the engine 'splutters' for a few seconds and the revs seem to fluctuate erratically around 1,000 - 1,200rpm (and on the odd occasion, the engine will stall).
The above only happens for a few seconds, until I depress the accelerator pedal.
- Around 3,500 - 4,000rmp, in any gear, there will be an obvious plume of white smoke, until I change gear.
- The accelerator seems to be getting less responsive with time, and sometimes takes around a second or two, to rev, after depression. (Only after starting, and only recently noticed)
I only notice the above if the car has stood for a few hours. i.e. Over night / During work.
Once ive had the engine running for a bit, it will start fine.
There are no obvious mis-fires in the engine, and it generally seems to drive as normal...
My best guess is that it's either:
A) An injector has gone down
B) Fuel timing is out
Ive read around, and most people suggest that white smoke is unburnt diesel.
Fuel filter looks brand new.
I did an oil & oil filter change over the weekend. and put a new Air Filter in too.
Any ideas as to what may be causing the dodgy starting, white smoke and reduced accelerator responsiveness, would be greatly appreciated.
I wanted some opinions before I start tampering!
Thanks
Tom

Are the glow plugs working? best remove them to see if they glow, valve clearances too tight? i think these are shimmed this can make starting difficult,
The list can go on but this is a good start. good luck.

Check your glow plugs, but a very common fault is air leaking into the injector pump when stood for some time....... oftern this is cause by two problem areas...the selfprimer gets perished and allows air to be 'sucked in' but no fuel leaks out...and/or the return pipes on the injectors perish, sucking air in the returning it back to the pump.
All very common..
Thanks

Hi, anymore happened with this?, my 406 HDi 2000 is the same, it only smokes for the first minute and feels like it is running on 3 cylinders but is okay once warmed up. The amount of white smoke I get is dependant on how long the car has stood. My glowplugs have been checked to be working.
