The engine of my 2.0 CDT cut out last January on a French motorway. The emergency engineer managed to restart it only after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. He had poured extra diesel into the tank without success in restarting. The car then drove without any problems for about 8000 miles.

Recently the engine refused to start and the AA engineer again only succeeded in restarting the engine after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

On both these occasions I had allowed the level of diesel in the tank to drop to very low levels just prior to the engine failure but had refilled the tank and driven about 40 miles before failure.

Diagnostic testing by a Bosch agent gave an error code which showed low fuel pressure and his educated guess was that the auxiliary fuel pump had an intermittent fault, but 2 instances in 11 months is not a lot to go on. Again the car seems to be behaving itself and replacement pumps are expensive, especially on an educated guess!

Can anybody suggest a better diagnosis?

A fuel-pressure code on these is nearly always the low-pressure pump playing up. Very common - though that doesn't mean that it's necessarily the fault on yours.

Also; always worth checking that the plenum drains are clear on these - the ECUs don't work well submerged.

This is a common issue and, as Screwloose indicates, is usually one of the fuel pumps at fault. Details on how to test and identify the culprit can be found on the owners club forums at www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum

And if you haven't checked and cleared the (three) plenum drains recently then it is an essential job to prevent very expensive damage. Again full details are on the club forums.

In the tank the gauge indicator and filter are under the rear nearside seat they unscrew themselves a design fault for which there are mods when they come completey apart the car stops for good until then it stops when the fuel is low.The pump is in the right hand side under the seat and when they become week they start having off days most fit PAS replacements to cure it but there are different types fitted. have a google on the rover forum there is full photo set of the problems with the pumps.

Thanks for your comments. I understand from reading forums such as this one that even if the tank pump fails the auxiliary pump will keep the car running unless the fuel level in the tank is low. The last failure occurred when the tank was only a gallon off full. Does this rule out the tank pump?

These are becoming renowned for various issues & low fuel pressure is one of them. the pressure solonoid on the diesel pump has a reputation for sticking & can cause high & low pressure problems. This valve gets gumed up & worn. I have delt with a R75 today that on T4 diagnostic equipment was faulting as low fuel pressure but the low pressure side was text book fgures but the high side was too high
pumps in the tank are a known fault. I would find a Rover specialist with T4 diagnostics to check it out.
When it doesn't start has it had various tests to establish cause? are the injectors operating? whats the fuel pressure, Has the crankshaft sensor been scoped when it doesn't start. Is the earth to pin 6 on the ECU perfect. is the EWS unit having a funny 5 minuets?
I have had problems with the earthing ( screening ) for cam & cranksensors . have a crank reading taken & ensure its creating a bi-polar signal because if its not this could be the area of problem. The crank sensor is converted from analouge to digital & if the signal is weak or swayed with a bad earth these cars don't like it. Has it ever had a faint hesitation around 3000 or 4000rpm?

I know very little about these, but my mate who fixes Diesels for a living reckons the low pressure pump in the tank literally comes apart (top comes off bottom part apparently). He basically pushes and turns it to put it back together and lock into place. It seems the routing of the hose puts a strain on it and causes this to happen. Sorry can't be more specific - not seen him fix these, he just told me about them one time when a 75 non-runner was dragged in.

Yes; the accumulator/filter unscrews itself. There's now a clamp to stop this happening; but I'm told a small screw does the job just as well.

I can't see this happening for 11 months though.

yep they do fall apart and there is a mod for it. Early cars have two pumps, one in tank & one up front on inner wing whereas later ones only have one pump. when the pump in the tank goes it goes !

Thats the filter side the pumps in the otherside a mod is available from Dave Lacey to cure this.

forgot to add Rule of thumb fuel pressure low side approx 400kpa & 33-36000 kpa high side. these readings can be retrieved with T4. They will still start & run at 330kpa low side

Many thanks 'injection doc'! Unfortunately ( or is it?) the car has run perfectly all this week. I'll have to wait for the next failure and have the car towed to a specialist for T4 diagnostics.
