I understand the concept where any road with street lighting X? yards apart is automatically a 30 limit, unless repeaters are posted to show some higher limit. I drive regularly along a road which is/was a normal 60 mph limited country 'A' road, with no lighting. Now some '50' signs have appeared but there are no repeaters at any interval and people joining the road from a side turning would not be aware of this new limit. Question - if a road is given a limit lower, or higher, than the one that would appear to be legal, at what minimum interval should repeater signs be put put, in order to meet the law, please?

The law was changed a few year's back, repeater signs are now required at 'regular' intervals. This was introduced to stop prosecutions from failing due to the repeaters being slightly too far apart.
Having said that the recomended spacing of repeaters in a 50mph limit is:
Maximum distance between consecutive signs on the same side of the carriageway: 700m
Maximum distance between consecutive signs on alternate sides of the carriageway: 450m
There should certainly be signs on the side road approaches.

Many thanks RB - I shall probably be onto the Rutland Council Traffic people during the week once I have double checked the facts and the 'side roads' aspect!

Tell the Council to refer to Traffic Advisory Leaflet 01/95
|
Aren't those distances for lighted areas? The OP said unlit.
|
As ever, the documentation is not perfectly worded. The heading to Table 1 of Traffic Advisory Note 01/95 does, indeed, refer to lit roads. The table then goes on to describe both lit and unlit roads.
In the absence of any other guidance on the length of 'regular intervals ' I have always used the figures in the table for the various speed limits.
01/95 can be found here tinyurl.com/3xb5n3 It refers to the 1994 Traffic Sign Regulations but I believe it is still current with regard to the 2002 Regulations.

Flight Briefing AS before your sortie to LA land
1. Whilst TA Note 01/95 still has some relevance, set your course to
tinyurl.com/2ddrd9
which has current thinking and published August 06.
Secondary target: www.tinyurl.com/b9kq Direction 11 ?
You will find some good information there but be prepared for long attack mode as long download.
2. From your Intel report seems new Speed Order being brought in and signing (sometimes sub-contracted) being effected. Until such time as fully signed in accordance with Regs unlawful so NSL applies (if unlt).
Check date of Order if so.
V2 stick back, u/c up and away you go.

Many thanks DVD. Until I read your posts here I thought 'Erudite' was some sort of glue - I know know differently. You are a true and reliable source of legal information!
