00 TDi won't start - lah
i have a 2000 w reg tdi s, passat.
after leaving the car stand for a week, i went to start it but the battery was dead.
i wnet to jump start it, but the ignition would not recognise my key, so i was advised to leave the ignition on and let the imobiliser reset to my key. after a bout 10 mins it did and it started. i let the car charge itself up for approx 1 hour then drove it with no problems. i then stopped the car and tried to start it again, but the battery again was completely dead, so again i jump started it, but this time the key would not work in the ignition even after trying to reset it, and a coil shape lit up on the dash. The battery is dead but as soon as i connect it to another car there is power going to the car, all the lights appear but the key ignition light flashes for about 10 minute and also this coil light, the battery goes completely dead again in about 2 mins, help!!!!!!!!

I am not familiar with TDI engines as I am still running an IDI but the problem sounds as though it could be on either. Something is obviously draining your battery, and something pretty hefty. The only thing I can thing of that could draw that much current without signs of smoke or flames, are the glow plugs. It could be that the relay has failed. The best way to check is to connect a meter from the glow plug connections to earth and then connect the battery. If the glow plugs are the culpret, you will see 12 volts appear immediatly you connect the battery.

I think the battery is goosed - sounds like there is just about enough juice to light the dash up, but not enough volts to make the electronics work properly. What voltage is the battery making?

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

the coil light is the glow plug indicator.

I'd start with checking the glow plugs and the relay. Battery may well be dead as well now, but I'd start with the plugs

thanks for your suggestion, it seems to be a common answer, i will start with the glow plugs,

There's no point in looking at the glow plugs if there isn't enough juice to even turn it over. The plugs are only about 50amps, they cannot flatten the battery in 2 mins - in fact nothing can - the battery cables would melt.

Almost certainly the battery is knackered, and unless you sort that most likely this car is going nowhere....

the glowplug light is the EML if it's flashing. It occupies the same position on the cluster as the EML on petrol cars.
