When you replaced the thermostat did you bleed the cooling system of air? If so, did you have the heater all the way to the red when you did it, cause if you didn't then you could have an air lock. If that's not the case then either the valve isn't opening and allowing coolant into the matrix, or the matrix itself is full of crud.

number of options for you to try:
1 top the coolant up (probs a bit obvious and you will have already done this after changing the 'stat)
2 matrix clogged up with rubbish (this was the problem on my car about a year ago and a reverse jetting with a hose pipe fixed it)
3 if you have the heater matrix bypass valve these can cause problems (do a search on "bypass valves" on clubgti.co.uk and you'll get the picture... very common issue. On that site some people recomend ditching the bypass valves and replacing with 15mm copper pipe, some say this is dangerous as it may lead to matrix failiure.

My personal take is that a slightly clogged matrix may cause the bypass valves to operate and cut off supply to the matrix (I am guessing that the bypass valves sense pressure drop across the matrix and shut off flow if the pressure drop is too large. So I would recomend jetting water through the pipes into the bulkhead from the return side (so the flow is reversed to normal). the return side is the metal pipe running down the side of the block and then behind the starter motor and along the front of the block.

Post back if you need any more clarity on this, where stuff is etc.

Drew 20,

I have the same car and same prob, well heater only lukewarm regardless. Coolant level is checked and fine

I need to do this reverse flush thing you describe, could you post detailed instructions ?

thanks in anticipation

well undo the hoses from the bulkhead side of the bypass valves (assuming you have them) and attach a hosepipe to the "out" pipe, this is the one that connects to the metal pipe that runs around the side of the engine. How you attach it depends on what you have to hand, I found a jet nozzle that wedged inside the rubber pipe very nicely.

You might also want to divert the water coming back out of the other pipe somewhere to stop it spraying you and/ or the engine electrics. I think I used to short hosepipe to do this.

Now just turn the water on (gently at first as the matrix is designed to take about 1bar but mains pressure is way more than 1bar) until there is a good flow flowing. Once the water runs clean then you're done. See if it has helped...

the idea is that reversing the flow will shift any muck that came in (back the way it came in)

as a word of caution, replacing the matrix is a pig of a job, so don't risk over-pressuring the matrix if you suspect that there is a blockage somewhere downstream of the matrix

When and how did it stop blowing warm? What does the temp gauge do?

Has it had a new waterpump?
