2003 tdi - transmission problems - richie40
I have just purchased a 2003 vw passat tdi 110 5 speed manual. I think the engine is AGW , but cant be sure at the moment. Gearbox is the one you dont have to push down for reverse.

The car drives and handles great , ive always wanted one and finaly came up with the cash , when i drove the car home it was warm and was ok but i noticed the gear change was a little notchy.......common maybe for this model.....i thought. the rest of it is ok so i,ll live with it.#

Next day from cold it was very difficult going int gear but after only a few miles its ok again. the strange thing is ,occasionally its perfect.

i,m worried about damaging it when its cold so I want it fixed , i don't think its terminal as the car has only done 47000 miles certified...........any ideas I have my own but i,m no vw specialist

gear oil gone thick ?
linkage ?

I wonder if the words "The DMF's on it's way - get rid of it quick" featured in it's recent past....?

Who was the seller?

a garage in liverpool, they gave me a month warranty which was no use to me any way as i work away most of the time.ive had a bit of mechanical experience and i refuse to accept its a permanent problem.i had a pug 406 td before this and it was an identical problem........lucky me !..........peugeot recomended a fully synthetic replacement gear oil which totaly cured the problem, unfortunately VW are not so helpful "just book it in and we,ll have a look at it" oh yeh , at £90 an hour and then they,ll phone up telling me the engine is goosed and you want new brakes , shocks , exhaust etc
this is why i,m here i,m hoping somebody is going to say"oh yeh . its the adjustment on the giggle shaft"
can anyone help?

The gears on my 2004 passat 130 tdi had a similar problem as yourself although my gears where nothcy all the time. I have had a new gearbox, new dmf and clutch and finally fully synthetic gear oil. The gears can still be notchy on the first start up but clears after a few miles.

It may be worth while posting here www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/

Richie40,

A dmf is the dual mass flywheel. Not sure exactly what it for but I think it stop vibrations. I sure some far more knowledgeable than myself will be able to you.

Yep Dual mass flywheel to reduce vibrations and shock between engine and transmission. The down side is they seem to give alot of trouble in all cars they are fitted to. One of the symptoms on our Golf TdI was clutch drag, if it wont go in reverse gear without crunching thats a good sign its the DMF. The surface is prone to distorting with raised areas also the bushes holding the thing together wears causing starter motor failure on Mondeos. It is recommended you change the DMF flywheel as routine on a clutch change. They are expensive from £250 to alot. I repaired cars for twenty years and never changed a flywheel, now is that Progress.
