A friend of mine is selling her cheap (£795) car to a 17year old girl who has just passed her test. Her mother is buying the car for her as a present, and does not drive. My friend said she would try to help her find the best insurance deal, so are there any companies anyone could recommend who might specialise in this field.
Obviously she will buy online and encourage daughter to obtain her 'Pass Plus'....out of curiosity what is the insurance group on a Daewoo Lanos 1.6 petrol please?
|
try confused.com or any of those insurance search engines, i tried last year and SWIFT insurance gave me the cheapest quote but that doesnt mean the best cover

The Parkers guide says it's group 6 Unfortunately I expect it's bound to cost more than the cars worth
Try Diamond , Direct Line, Quinn, CIS, Tesco, Liverpool Vic even the Prudential might be worth a try

Lanos 1.6 is probably group 6 -

As you will discover, £795 may sound cheap for a car, but I expect the insurance will be more than the value of the car. The only good news is that assuming no claims, it will drop by about 35% in the second year if you shop around again.
|
not an ideal car for a first time 17 year girl group 6 as said, you may even find it uninsurable for her age
get her a 1.2 corsa for the same money and group 2 insurance and she will be be able to control it much better than a blind spot lanos with large c pillars

I saw a perfectly good 1988 Nova 1.2 on AT recently - 8 months MoT, six tax, and all for £150. OK, not so crashworthy, but perfectly good to learn in.
|
thats the kind of thing ly,a good kick around the bodywork and tyres, make sure it ticks over ok and the brakes work and its an ideal learner car and they were reliable unless it had the old viva engine in it

It seems like the 'deal' has already been done so rather than suggest different cars we'd do better to suggest insurers!
When I was 18 I was able to find a broker that did 12 months NCB for 6 months actual driving, so get the cost down quicker. I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea who that was but ringing round the brokers might be a good idea.
At 19 I was insured with Direct Line on a group 12 car and still happily with them now 2 years later. They seemed to be among the cheapest (though still not cheap!)

These were recommended on HJ previously. www.gsi-insurance.com/young.php

I mentioned GSI Southern so it might be my fault then for this reference ;-)
Here's our experience so far for my step-son now 21:
- First car in 2004 a Panda 4x4 Sisley on an H plate... bought for £350 (sold for about £750!) and insurance was £1400 TPFT! With Direct Line.
- Next car in early 2005 was an H Plate Fiesta - increased insurance to equivalent of £1700pa with Direct Line. Car not actually road worthy so refund!
- Next car a Citroen AX 1.4 diesel and insurance around the same again.
Then insurance lapses and no money.... and he later gets a FIAT 126bis and insurance about £900pa TPFT with one year no claims. Swaps for a Pug 306 1.6 XSi for a fair bit more money.
Last change of insurance was for the Pug 306 and I managed to find TPFT for him at less than £800pa via GSI. Then he's swapped to a Proton Compact 1.5 for around the same. At this point he was 21 but we'd get little back on the insurance policy (if indeed nothing) by swapping elsewhere and lose 12 months NCD.
The thing with GSI though is they are a broker. Son's insurance is actually with HSBC and you pay upfront for the year. To pay monthly (he has to) is therefore via a "family loan", other finance or GSI do offer this via a third party finance house (Amber?). If you cancel before 12 months you owe the finance house still!
Hope this add value.

I've been with Direct line for just over 5 years now, still cheapest for me Im nearly 24 now.

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

I find that Admiral, Direct Line, Elephant and Ecarinsurance are amongst the best for young drivers.

Forget anyone that can afford to advertise on the tv, well overpriced.
Endsleigh and Quinn are cheap, but Crowthorne worked out best for me.

Just passed test, 20years old, Fiat Brava 1600cc, in my own name tpft, £700.

Would echo what Moggy said but I got best deal for my 17 yr old daughter from Qinn Direct. Excesses are reasonable, but couldn't pay by DD. Actually got a closely competetive quote from Kwikfit! Car is a 1242 Punto.

The comparison sites won't necessarily find you the cheapest cover but are a good place to start. The final quote will often be different from the quote on the comparison site (usually more).
That said our best quote for my son (3rd year driving, Fiat Panda Group 2, comprehensive) came from Swift via I think www.comparemoreatdixons.co.uk but we went with the Pru in the end for a few £ more with slightly better benefits.
Shopping around unfortunately has to be repeated every year. LV were as good as anyone for the first two years (£1350, £915) but actually wanted an increase this year despite no claims - the Prudential was about £500, so a massive difference.
I have a feeling Group 6 will be expensive. Pass Plus will get her a reduction with some companies (and is probably no bad thing to do anyway - son did it and felt he benefitted.

Hi - anyone know which insurers offer discount for Passplus? Is there a comparison site which I can use?
TIA
