I hope that there are no sparks - that's a diesel.
Presumably; you mean that it's not cranking over when you turn the key - yes? What do the dash warning lights and the interior light do when you try to crank it?
This could be a flat battery - when did you last use it and did you notice the lights dimming, or any other "low power" signs?
These eat alternator belts - when was it last checked/changed?
Have you tried, hefty, jump leads from another car?
|
See what I mean... that's it not cranking... I used the car last night - no problem at all... no dimming etc... I'm gonna try jump leads tonight... With the dashlights nothing at all... The Lights/Wipers work fine etc... but no cranking...
Cheers for this...

What do the dashlights and interior light do when you crank it?
|
the battery light comes on and then goes off as per normal when you first turn the key for the battery to start the light comes on and goes off after 2-3 seconds... no flickering at all...
|
What do all the dashlights and the interior light do when you crank it?
|
nothing at all... there is no resistance or cranking when I turn the key... I'm thinking it may be the starter motor? I hope not...
|
Have you checked for a feed to the starter? is the battery full charged? good earth?imobiliser ok? more info required please..

Good grief, I thought I had the only one of these, and mine is 1995.
I think the guys would like more detail on what happened before the failure, and precisely what it is. My twopennyworth - does the key indicator light go off? It is alongside the indicator for the heater plugs on mine.
Keeps going, but sounds like 2 skeletons having sex in a filing cabinet. Very difficult to work on. Don't believe Haynes, the alternator comes out through the top

Tried jump Starting it - no luck... tried bump starting it - nothing!
Tuesday night nothing out of the ordinary happen... started fine etc... Wednesday morning nothing...
This morning, the battery light stays on along with the oil light... the key indicator goes off once the heater plugs go off...

When you jump start it, does the thing turn over. Not by any chance hit the Inertia switch have you (the one that cuts off fuel etc if you have a bang). Used to be easily done in Sierras, if you threw something on the spare wheel). On a Punto it is inside the car, I think.
|
Nothing at all when tried to jump start it... - BTW where is the inertia swith in a punto then?
Cheers

Under the passanger seat, there is a little circular push to make switch.
|
If the intermittant problem persists, consider the "ignition" switch as the culprit.
|
If it starts fine some days and not others it won't be the inertia switch and a diesel of this age won't be fitted with an inertia switch-it's used to turn off the electric fuel pump.

I'm not trying to be flippant but have you got AA Homestart or anything like that?
|
After calling the AA - who couldn't start it... I tried knocking the Starter, but no joy... Decided to have a look at the starter motor... indeed this was the culprit! got one from scrappie £30 and put it on - starts each and everytime!?
Cheers for pointing me in the right direction...
This forum does help unlike the fiat ones?!
Now does anyone know how to decode a phillips car stereo?!
