Well, I was a naughty boy yesterday and got my first lot of 3 points (and £60) for over 10 years, got 3 points back in 1996 but been good for over 10 years. It left me pondering, how many points have the backroomers (inc. Honest john!) gor on there licences? Be honest now..... :)

None active but I've never bothered having old endorsements removed. There's one each from '73, '83, and '93.
Yes I can do the arithmetic, I'm 4 years overdue for another!
|
I think mine have all expired but they are barely legible anyway on my tattered paper licence (wherever it is).
|
SP30 in 1990. I was driving in a 60 limit in a car that all traffic cops of that era yearned to catch speeding ~ a red XR3i. I was timed between a tree and a signpost using a dash-mounted stopwatch and my speed was calculated to two places of decimals! None before and none since.

Oh yeah, forgot to add... what did you get the points for? Speeding, Careless driving? etc.
Mine was for stupidly answering my mobile phone... wont be doing that again.
|
sorry, didn't realise we were confessing to old ones too - been done 3 times for speeding, two SP 30s, first one a week after I had passed my test (still was a £60 fine tho' a lot of money in the early '80s) and an SP 40 - last one over 12 years ago.

What driving licence?
|
None at present.
3 points for an SP30 were kindly removed free of charge when I got my new, valid for 3 year, licence this month.
I think it will only be a matter of time.......
|
None. But the defendant asks that two previous lots of three points be taken into account.

LOL Fothers. He's probably got about 14.
My last points were for running a red light (in perfect safety needless to say).

I meant HJ has probably got 14 licences, not 14 points on one of them... :o)

Fined £30 for speeding in 1974 and licence endorsed. £60 today - that seems a bargain!

Somehow, I have none and never have had any. I think this says more about the woeful level of traffic police on our roads than my careful driving style.

I read often, only post occasionally

Have six showing on licence for speeding, 2 x SP30's. None of them count for totting up purposes, 3 still count for insurance purposes (why are insurers more interested in my history than magistrates?).
|
None myself (strokes Sat Nav camera database...)
|
|
mines totally clean although i did have an SP30 a few years ago for 70 in a 30
|
None at the moment - got a speeding fine in 1972 (over 40mph in a van going downhill on a deserted dual carriageway at about 3am) but don't remember any points - did they exist in '72? On the spot speeding fine in Austria in 1974 (again strangely enough going downhill in a van!)
It's only a matter of time before I get done though - not because I am a reckless speeder but no doubt because of a moment's carelessness.

3 in 1987 and a severe WARNING from a cop a few years later was what I meant to say (Well done the swear filter). Nothing since, but some close shaves with cameras and mobile units.

No points at all, though that's more by luck than judgement especially as I must drive around 50k miles a year!
|
|
3 points from 2005 for an SP60 on my bike. Camera van somewhere on A303 in Wiltshire, never did see it.... after looking at the rough location on another visit I suspect it was in lay by on other side of road.......speed wasn't great, but was enough.
|
43 years since passing my test and as yet NONE.
Stopped once and asked if I knew what speed I was doing coming into a 30 limit - stop watch and 2 policemen 220 yds apart (1/8th mile to make the counting easier for plod!!) - there were no radar guns at that time.
But there are cameras all around so the next 10+ years or so (until my Zimmer Arrives) I need to be careful.
|
Very bitter first 3 last December. Turned right at traffic lights onto a dual carriageway, up to 39 mph as rounding a gradual bend and FLASH. Went back the next day to check for signage as neither of us had seen any. 30 mph sign on left of road almost level with blinding camera flasher on the right .... that's Hampshire police for you.
|
Where there street lights there ?
|
None (in 11 years of driving), although I should have 3 points for getting caught doing 39 in a 30 coming out of Tunbridge Wells just before midnight one Thursday last year.
I opted for the choice of the Kent Police Speed Awareness course to keep my license clean.

Day time, should have checked. The dual carriageway into Southampton from Forest direction is 50 mph despite having lots of offices/halls entrances etc bordering it, going down to 40 mph near the centre. This was other side of Southampton (alien territory) and both sides of the carriageway I was on had high concrete sides with no buildings in sight - still cannot understand why that stretch was 30 - although, of course, I have only travelled on a short distance on it so a local may have a better idea.
I am boringly careful on ordinary roads as I cannot risk my licence - although I have been known ( ;~}) in the past to make good progress on a clear motorway.

Well that's the measure of our once great nation, my children have both left the UK for sunnier and more liberal climes, I am so happy for them.
|
Been driving for just over 45 years. No points for 44 years, then 3 points for 46 mph in a 40 limit, last winter, as detailed in my posting at the time (18th Dec 2006). I was pretty pink fluffy diced about it.

Yawn.
What a load of dreary old carp.
Are there no red-blooded elements here? I fear not.
Is there no one here who is totally banned for no good reason? There certainly should be.
|
HMG has stated that having motoring convictions shows criminal tendencies of the driver.
So, lets liven things up, those of you with points, what other sins - breaking, rape, pillage etc? In relation to the second no need to be specific or go indo detail or PU will stab his finger.

Oh well, if we're coming clean. I collected my first endorsement in 26 years of driving 6 months ago for tailgating on the A9 Autobahn north of Munich. 4 points to be exact, as well as a 180Euro fine and a 30 day driving ban. Ouch, won't do that again. Before anyone asks, I have a german driving licence. UK licences are not endorsable here.

They will take your UK driving licence and attach a small ticket with extremely sticky stuff to the credit card part of your licence which defines the offence and fine you the same as a native...I (ahem) read somewhere :(

They have to catch you first. In my case I was photographed by one of the semi-automated tailgating camera thingies and received a notification to appear at the local police station based on my car registration number. Then I had to check the photos to confirm the car was mine (wow I really was close to the car in front), check the photo of the driver to confirm it was me and sign an admission form and show my german driving licence to be checked against the central database. Two weeks later I received a letter requesting me to surrender my driving licence for 30 days (boo) at a time convenient to me (hooray). How does this work for foreign licences?
Another point, I don't know how they got such good quality pictures, 2 of the car and 1 of the driver, bearing in mind I was doing 180km/h at the time.
|

The same way I would imagine. The only experience I have of this is a friend of my wife has only been in Germany a couple of months and was caught speeding (less than 10kph over the limit) and was fined, twenty or thirty euros I think it was, and got 1 point on her licence. It was attached as described above after the appear at the police station performance.
It is law for you to carry your licence over there so if you are stopped and can't produce, a quick check of their records will show if you are banned or not. Then I would imagine you would be quite deeply in the brown stuff.
Another point, I don't know how they got such good quality pictures, 2 of the car and 1 >> of the driver, bearing in mind I was doing 180km/h at the time.
Had you just driven under one of the Maut gantries ? I believe these also have high speed cameras used for checking the distance between cars. Another thread here has covered this.

No it wasn't a maut gantry. They can't measure the distance between cars, it's an urban myth. The police here use a special very complicated (well this is Germany) portable system, normally mounted on a bridge. There is a camera under the bridge which takes a photo, a measuring device in front of the bridge which measures speed and distance and is also, I believe, equipped with a camera. And there is a video system on the bridge itself which continuously monitors traffic. When you get done for tailgating they show you the 3 photos and offer to show you the video in case there are any mitigating circumstances, e.g. car pulling out in front.

Bit surprised about that. Up to 10kmh over the limit is normally 15Euros fixed penalty and no points. I, ahem, speak from experience.

That was the story I got, probably more likely got kph and mph mixed up.
Back to OP question. Had 9 points in total, not all valid at once, two SP30's and a TS20.
On the A1 in Northumberland, passed the dangerous junction for which the double whites were in force, Fiesta in front slavering along at 35 in a 60, I could see there was nothing coming went for the overtake but crossed double whites just before they ended.
Unmarked behind me stopped me and the Fiesta.
No video, copper on his own and the 'driver' in the Fiesta agreed to be a witness.
That was seven years ago. I drive like a saint in the UK now, no points on my licence, it's not worth the grief.

None! A little bit of a miracle because I choose my own safe speed on every road I drive on and do around 20k a year. I've only been driving 2.5 years though.
Had some close calls mind! Had a police car pull in front of me once, and the copper looked at me as if I'd committed some disgusting crime before asking me if I wanted to slow down. I just said "Ok" but I truthfully wasn't speeding. I'd taken a tight bend at 30 in a 30 limit but I wasn't speeding. It was safe too, but sometimes it's best not to argue. :o)

my full history
c. 1990 - 3 points - overtaking on double white lines (fair cop - although two lanes coming up hill and me going down hill in one lane behind someone doing 30 in a 60)
1999 - 3 points - doing 94.86mph on the M74
2004 - 3 points - doing 81mph in a 70mph (A303 - the big downhill bit just before Countess Service station and pre-fixed cameras)

I'm no fan of "safety" cameras, but has anyone on here actually been done for 31 in a 30. Nobody I have actually spoken to including my mother who claimed she had been done for 32 has ever managed to be able to find the nip when asked for it.

none to date , but had a close shave with a road side breath test about 20 years ago

DR10 20 years ago......currently sat on 9, all SP30's and all in the last 3 years.
Know from bitter experience which road Deepwith is talking about in Southampton...
a perfect example of revenue collecting over safety....and I live on that side of town!
One momentary loss of concentration..........

Full history shows
12month ban for DUI in 1980 (asleep in the back seat still counts apparently!)
3 point speeding in 1993
3 point speeding in 2002
that makes 32 years of pretty much undiscovered crime!

silly me - the keys were in the ignition as I had run the engine to get the heater working before settling down under my blanket!

My history is:
1988 - SP30 - traffic car hidden behind bush - 3 points and if memory serves, £40 fine back then.
1991 (License clean again for only 4 days) - SP30 - traffic car parked in hidden side road - 3 points and £60.
1997 SP30 - traffic car hidden in entrance to cemetary, at 2 o'clock in the morning on a deserted road on the outskirts of town - really annoyed me that one.
So, never been caught by a scamera, as given that all fixed sites have camera signs in the area I think it's quite easy to be sensible in the appropriate places. However, caught 3 times by traffic cars, last one just over 10 years ago, since when the number of traffic cars has dramatically reduced to be replaced by scameras. Might just be coincidence...but I am more sensible these days as I get older and *cough* wiser.
On the first one, utter sarcasm showed by the officer when he realised that the L plates on the car were mine, and that I was still just a learner:
Officer - Who's are the L's on the back sir?
Me (slightly pooing my pants) - they're mine officer.
Officer - dear o dear - that's not a very good start is it young man?
Officer (to my friend, the recently passed passenger) - And I take it you are this young man's able teacher sir?
Mate (more cocky than me) - whatever!
Officer - Might I suggest Sir, that you decide which station you want your pupil to drive past on the way home for you to produce your license. Whilst you are deciding, I'll borrow your pupil for a little while so he can come and sit in my car and receive his homework.

Hate tempting fate but not a single point gathered since started driving 20 years ago.
I always say that when I do get done for speeding, I will just accept it as it will cover me for the last 20 years when I have sped on countless occasions but never been caught.
However I used to say that about parking tickets until I got my first one 5 years ago..... still raging about that!!

Zilch in 40 years on the road but my luck must run out soon with all these cameras around. Loads of folks I know have got points for the odd mph over a limit and I'm no better driver than them.
