Mercedes C240 ,Starting problems. When starting the engine turns for a long time sounding like a carb engine with the choke not working. If you stop engine then start again its ok,but leave for an hour or so the engine takes a long time to start. Its like this 8 out of ten times of starting. It has been to a bosch fuel injection specialist and he says its not electrical as the diagnostic equipment does not show up a fault. The general consensus of opinion seems to be fuel pump. Please can I have your ideas please before I give this particular merc` a Viking funeral.

Possible faults for poor starting are erratic flywheel/tdc sensor and engine coolant temp sensor that is out of range. These may not show as fault codes. The live data from the diag system needs to be checked. Both components are cheap and easy to replace.hth

Methinks could be crankshaft sensor, rather than a fuel problem.
But I'm guessing...

I see you've raised the issue on the MB site so you'll probably get some ideas there too.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. The bosch specialist says that both the coolant and crank sensors are both fine.I have ordered a genuine fuel pump,so that should eliminate the fuel side of things. Thanks again.

Not unless you fit a new fuel pump relay too.

This does fit a coolant temp sensor fault; live data readings when it's just cranking would be nice.

Ok chaps, here is the solution to my particular starting problem. It was number 1 fuel injector leaking. It cost £405.00 to put right, which I suppose is not too bad for a main dealer.I hope this helps someone else.If someone wants to e mail me about this problem and they think they have a similar fault, please do.stephentanks1@yahoo.co.uk
