On the M40 this morning, I was passed by a newish XJ - 54, I think - that seemed to be trailing a little silvery cloud that wasn't spray rising from the wheels. As it disappeared, I noticed it was also leaving behind a strong whiff of diesel fuel. Anyone like to suggest what might have caused this - and what risk it might have posed to the Jaguar driver and the rest of us?

Particulate filter cleaning its self? Several modern diesels, especially BMW's, put out clouds of white smoke (looks like a blown turbo) do this regularly.

Interesting, PD. Would you expect that smoke to smell of diesel?

I should say that if it wasn't tyre spray, but looked wet and smelt of diesel, it may have been a fuel leak of some sort.
If so, then in answer to your question:
Risk to Jag driver - running out of fuel a lot sooner than he thinks.
Risk to any motorcyclist following him - substantial. I don't think I'd have been too happy.

Overfilled and leaking off via breather or similar?

Or maybe split fuel return pipe.
