Tyre wear...........

Punto 1.9D, heavy old `gasper` of an indirect injection diesel. Heavy on front the front end, especially if `thrown` into corners and roudabouts by SWMBO.

So badly abused on corners that the first 2 front sets did only around 7,500 miles.
Pirelli standard fitment `eco tyres` ( something like that)..

Became desperate about this and it was clear SMBO was having none of it re driving advice.
So after consulting a tye dealer, I fitted I fitted Hancook RA08 reinforced commercial tyres (all round)

The result has been a tripling of mileage on the front despite the same `fling it into the roundabout` driving style.
Some of you may remember me posting a long while back about `eco` type tyres and `fuel savers`.

Guess what, no measurable difference, still averaging over the year, 53mpg on heavy duty stop start type driving.

The only difference was a slightly firmer ride, only noticable on the first drive or two and much better handling if forced into an emergency swerve.
The tread depths a lot deeper on these tyres too.

I suppose if your getting upwards of 25,000 on tyres of the `fuel saver` type it doesnt matter. But again, the wear is around only 1/3 of the eco tyres so..............

But if your other half drives as though its a combat mission.. :)

This post so could have been me....

My wife has the same " Toca" driving style having purchased the Seat Altea know she thinks she's "Plato" in the thing !! problem is the car is fitted with Michelin Enegry's all round so tyre ware is good - replacement cost Hmmm!!

Oh well Wanli specials next !!

'Er indoors is the most mechanically unsympathetic person on this planet. I keep looking for the 'Club' right foot cos she can boot a motor like no other. She is quietly known as Fittipaldi in some circles. However, when I am pilot she tuts and fusses, grabs the rail, door handle, credit card or whatever is available and moans that I am driving too fast, but she....................well! She can also lengthen a handbrake cable by 50% in a month!! Now that's what I call strength.

You are all braver than me criticising the fair ladies or are these comments made safe in the knowledge that SWMBO will never know.....well i am making notes...

For a small fee i may not tell!!!!!

I`m amused about this as my post was supposed to be about the actual tyres :)

mmmm.... Human interest always wins :):)

OK then, continuing the `theme`
The drivers door just gets flung open on ours without holding on to it.

SWMBO, would just laugh about these posts and say to us, "get a life"

Tell me about it. No mechanical sympathy at all. And you can't tell 'em. Doors flung open and bounced off the hinges, slammed shut regardless, boot lid slammed down with me in the car, indicator stalks whacked up and down, roundabouts on two wheels*, clutch dragging, oh my poor transmission. Sob...

*slight exaggeration, but regularly point out that each poxy black circle costs about £70.

My dear lady can turn the ignition key and be at the end of the drive before the engine has actually fully started up.

Well thats what it sounds like. "Please dear can you start the engine and let it idle for just a couple of seconds to let the oil circulate before you move off?" Any change? Like heck!

my wife always prefers the two nearside tyres not to show any words on the sidewalls

i've mentioned this before

my SWMBO had never driven an auto when i met her (about 3 yrs ago) and was used to driving a small diesel Pug

she used my car for a week (3 litre auto petrol) and complained about an intermittent warning light

"yes my little petal, that's the traction control...urgently trying to prevent you from spinning, power sliding or leaving all my tread on the tarmac"

she gets me back when i try using the computer though...on that i really am useless

Its reassuring that there is a common theme in all these posts, which seems to be `Its not worth attempting education on mechanical sympathy`

Maybe we should just boot the handbags off the floor and up onto a chair instead of picking them up? ;=)

Anyway, Any comments on the tyres? The switch to reinforced and the greatly reduced wear rate, with no obvious fuel penalty?

We live down a bumpy track. I can negotiate the potholes, rots etc. to produce a passable ride at a modest speed of about 15 mph. SWMBO drives straight through every hole she can find, at about 30 mph.

Then she complains about her back hurting because of the state of the track...

I'll bite.

How did you / the supplier come up with the Hankook RA08 ?
When I look at their website they catagorise this as a 'light truck' tyre.

Thats what they are johnsnc and will say something like 6 ply on the sidewalls, they are built for berlingo type vans which get used as local delivery vans and hit kerbs at 30mph daily

now did i tell you about the time the wife got a puncture?...........................................well it was a very very long time agooooooooooo
Tyre experiment over.. - Gromit {P}
How much more than a "normal" Hankook tyre did the commercial version cost? And do they still have to be changed at 5 years as with normal tyres where the compound degrades on exposure to sunlight?

In other words, are they useful to a low-mileage driver like me who drives on bad roads where I'm more likely to pick up punctures?
Tyre experiment over.. - oilrag
Cant find the receipt Gromit. About £45 each, I think.
I suppose the sunlight issues the same, not sure. Greater tread depth. More robust tyre as its reinforced.

I`m fitting them on the Multijet Punto van, when the standart Firestone `fuel saver`fronts wear out, although thats got a projected 20,000 mile tyre life, the way they are wearing.

Not sure whether I can just fit them on the front and leave the hardly worn fuel savers on the back, Will take advice from the tyre specialist on that. ( I dont mean the popular fast fit places)

Any thoughts on this ?

HI Johnsnc, I fitted them at a tyre specialists recommendation, when asking for advice re the severe wear problem on the standard tyres.

( and having not been able to alter wifes driving style)

And does your wife insist upon steering while the car's standing still?

Ooh don't even mention that! If I'm a passenger and the driver does that (whether or not I know him/her), I find it very difficult to keep quiet. I can almost feel each atom of tyre being ripped off by the road surface. Banning power steering would sort this problem out! ;-)

It's the downchanges into 2nd at 40 mph when slowing and the use of the clutch as a footrest that turn me into a gibbering wreck. Other than that, I actually think SWMBO is a good driver. Makes good, safe progress, good observational skills, and was more than capable of holding the MX-5 sideways for 100yds or more. :-)

Cheers

Does she ever do that thing where she's slowing down from 50/60, braking all of the time, dips the clutch, changes from 5th to 4th, then from 4th to 3rd, then into 2nd, without letting in the clutch at any point? Effectively, then, slowing from pretty dam' fast to a stop with the clutch dipped throughout.
What's the point in that?

Went to buy new brake pads the other week.
Says the guy behing the counter: "Your wife: Does she have a club foot?"
