Help wanted - Road Tax issue - arnold2
Hi All,
Having exhausted all the avenues I can think of, I need some advise on what to do with regards 2 unlicensed cars located near my home, driven regularly on the road by one driver.

As well as no Road tax, both cars look like they are not even roadworthy (broken windscreen, lack of any visible exhaust, etc.), and I would fear for anyones safety being involved in some sort of road accident with either vehicle.

My first port of call was to notify the DVLA, using their website. After several weeks and the first unlicensed car still being used, I reported the matter to the local Police, not once, but on several occasions - they confirmed the status of the car Road Tax to me. They only responded in person once, and clearly having never watched any detective programmes on TV, proceeded to park themselves for all of 10 minutes directly outside the house of the driver of the car - needless to say, the driver didn't move the car at that time!
In the end, in frustration, I confronted the driver, and pointed out I would video the car the next time it was drive. Well, one result was that the first car wasn't used again - but then a second car appeared. However, a quick check on the DVLA website revealed an equally unlicensed vehicle.

So tonight I have seen this second vehicle come and go again - it is now, as I write, parked ON THE ROAD (not off it) - it has no Tax Disc displayed. When I called the Police earlier toady, there response was - 'it is not our priority' !
What else can I do to ensure both vehicles are not used on the road?

petrol bomb would be my first thought
ring your council tell them the situation ,they should send someone out to sticker these vehicles and then remove them very quickly, works well in my area
not happy at the police response or dvla mind as these are usually very cooperative, the house isnt owned by a coppers nark by any chance?

recorded letter to the chief constable also mentioning the PRIORITY issue and a letter to your MP asking him to ask the Chief Constable why it is not a priority.

Next time you phone the police, tell them you have been in touch with the local paper and they seem very interested.

While I wouldn't condone any criminal damage on a roadworthy, taxed vehicle, some people may think differently about a death-trap on wheels driven by someone who does not respect the law, or his fellow citizens.

hmm - didn't know the local council can get involved - wonder what department deels with that... I shall try anyway - and the local newspapar angle! I've done the MP angle already...

I must say I have been astonished at the lack of response from Plod - mind you I live in one of the counties that recently complained of lack of funds for the Police force...

didn't know the local council can get involved -

If it's untaxed and on the road, report it as an apparent abandoned vehicle.

Enviromental Health.

Neighbourhood Policing in Cambridgeshire appears pretty strong.

Before going off on one and writing to the world and his dog, try this page
www.cambs.police.uk/myneighbourhood/district.asp?I...3

You should be able to contact your neighbourhood officers,Police or PCSO, both have powers to seize under devolved powers from DVLA, maybe contacting an individual in your local Team will resolve the problem. I would resist the encouragement on this site to commit offences yourself. They may be weak on Traffic enforcement but petrol bombing might end up with collars being felt.

If you are more than 5 secs late with sending off the slip on your V5 - then DVLA will fine you and not listen to any excuses like "the dealer said he would send it off".
Point is it is easier to fine the easy targets which tend to be more law abiding than seek out those who show a complete disregard for the tax and registration system.

Right on the money. Cops have little interest in this type of thing when DVLA can expertly extract cash from people they have a very large database on. If your local chav hasn't taxed his cars, likely he will be completely invisible with nothing in his name to alert the authorities.

Firstly Arnold2 - well done for being a pro-active citizen! Many people would not have pursued this as you've done.

The police response puzzles me - I would have expected them to stick a notice on the car at least, then follow that up with removal - why on earth they sat in their pandas for one-off a tea-break surveillance is baffling. However, it could do no harm to write to and/or email the chief constable directly & CC your local MP outlining the sequence of (non!) events so far (..or at least indicate this in the circulation list on your letter head..).

Although I applaud you public spirited actions, I would caution any more direct contact with the driver. People who have such little regard for vehicle law, probably ditto in other areas too. Make sure you mention in further correspondence with the Police that you've spoken directly with the driver to establish that connection.

best of luck

Every so often our local police do a survey, round up and tow away unlicensed cars... and fines etc...

www.slough.gov.uk/news/articles/archive/7341.aspx shows what can be done..
Print that and send to your police and ask nicely why they cannot do it. Probably too busy filling in forms and arresting people for non PC offences...

"police unlicensed cars swoop" gives lots of answers in a search.

Is that an endorsement(!) Mr Mod?

Anyway, Dale is curiously silent on the matter...

Sorry Woodbines should have added I my sig (see below) an observation that it may be counter- productive. The message may not be getting to the troops on the ground, they are generally enthused by taking cars off naughty drivers.
