I was amused by the advert in Conde Nast Traveller for the Range Rover.
"GO RESPONSIBLY
The Range Rover TDV8 is 30% more fuel efficient than the petrol version it replaced."
The small print for the "Go responsbily' message?
Urban 12.6-19.6mpg
Extra-urban 23.1-30.1mpg
Combined 17.7-25.0 mpg
CO2 299-376 g/km
So that's top CO2 tax band (by a long way), urban fuel consumption barely into double figures, and they are marketing it as a responsible choice? Shurely shome mishtake.

sorry, error in title, should be Range Rover, not Range Rover Sport

Not picking on LR on this point because they all advertise based on economy / CO2 however as a buyer with the environment in mind it is much better to run the V8 petrol into the ground and not replace it with a new diesel V8 because of the embedded carbon in the new vehicle.
No joined up thinking, in environmental terms encouraging people to by new clean vehicles does not make sense, encouraging them not to buy a new vehicle and to continue to use their old one does, that is if you believe in global warming which is another story. Too many agendas.

Well the advert is giving the range from the supercharged model (the low figures) to the TDV8 which is 19.6/30.1/25.0 and 299g/km so technically it's not as bad you as would make out from your final conclusion and in comparison to the "bad" figures of the supercharged model (which is now the only alternate to the TDV8) it's a saving of 77g/km on government figures, which is oh about 3.7 tons of CO2 over 30000 miles so I'd say it's a more responsible choice. It's not the cleanliness of a Polo BlueMotion but then again nobody who was looking at a Range Rover Supercharged is going to turn round and go "oh I'll take the little rattly one, thank you very much".
Besides if you take a look through the motoring press you'll note that the Range Rover and Range Rover Sports tend to turn in fuel consumption of around book mpg +/- 1mpg while the smaller cars, the Prius' and Clios of this world seem to miss by at least 10-15mpg. If you are doing 30mpg in a diesel Range Rover (possible on a trip) or 30mpg in a diesel Mondeo (possible while towing in town) then you are emitting the same amount of CO2 despite the 140g/km variance in CO2 on government figures.
Nothing is as simple as it seems on the surface, well in my opinion anyway.

That's advertising spin for you!
'Diesel more economical than petrol' doesn't sound so arresting, though, does it?
|
Its a good job, then , that aircraft run on kerosene rather than petrol and are all the more friendly to the environment because of it.

Saw one of these dammed things with a "Supercharged" and "Land Rover Special Vehicles" on the back of it in Cornwall a while back around Truro.
Anybody know if it is possible to SC a TDV8 and whether LRSV produced it?
Vehicle in question was in black with alloy step rails.
|
If supercharged it is the petrol V8, basically the XKR / XJR engine.
|
No it was definately a diesel as the petrol has twin exhausts one either side and it sounded like a diesel when it pulled away.
It was just the fact it was marked as a TDV8 witha "supercharged" and "LRSV Badge" and the query was is it capable to SC a TDV8
|
Well a TDV8 has twin TCs, perhaps someone has put a supercharger badge off a petrol one on it or perhaps it is a special of some kind.
