'98 1.8d Interior water leak & Poor starting. - matthewk1971
I know I am a little behind the posting here, but I hope someone notices...lol
I have the same leak, have looked at where you recommend to seal up but can't get into it, it is under my pollen filter (which is old, dry and full of crap) and only leaves me a couple of inches to get through.
Any tips on how to reach the rubber seal to get the silicon to it?

Also, my 98 fiesta is getting very low economy no. When I got it last spring I got 420-440 miles per tank, now it's 320.
I have had 2 new air filters in 12 months, I have done an oil change (and flushed the system with a cleaner), fitted a new seal to the oil sump (as it was leaking) and used red paste to help with the seal. I keep the tyres inflated to 32psi.
For a while it was ok on motorway trips and bad around town, but now it just seems to be bad everywhere!
Any tips on what could be causing it?
Over the last four or five weeks I also have a new problem where if I get the engine warm and then turn it off it won't restart until it has cooled down. It just turns over as if it's flooded.

thanks in advance for help.

Hopefully; one of our kind mods will move this to a new thread* - once you supply full engine details!

In the meantime; the coolant temp sensor for the engine management would be favourite for your fault.

Apologies for lack of detail, didn't enter my head at all!
It is a 98 model, 1.8D. The temp gauge on the dash always stays ok, also had some problems with heaters blowing hot for random intervals, even when set to cold air.

A diesel one! Hot start faults are rare on any diesel.

Diesels can't easily flood - you wouldn't want to try and start one if it had!

The only thing that comes to mind is a non-genuine fuel filter that doesn't quite fit the quick-release fuel line connectors and is leaking air.

Tight tappets are another possibility - but that's scraping the barrel. Does it produce black smoke?

Maybe taking it to a diesel specialist for a check-over and re-tune of the pump would be best.

Cheers for the tips on the starting problem, I will look into a local deisel garage, see what I can find.
Any ideas on the economy??
