Neighbour is buying a new Mazda CX7 and has for sale his 4 yr old Mazda 6 Sport4 - AWD 2.3 automatic estate car with 20K mls.
They are almost as rare as hen's teeth - does any BR have one / had experience of in the past. If you have the TS2 model this must be similar apart from the 4WD - what are your experiences.
I would get it for the trade-in price offered by the dealer - it has done just under 20K mls in the 4 years.
I have an 9yr old Mazda Xedos6 and it has been nigh perfect in the 8yrs I have had it so my Mazda experiences have so far been 99% positive.

Possibly the dealer trade in price is inflated, your neighbour will likely save anything up to 1k by buying with no trade in. Just a thought as I was buying a car for my parents and the vendor wanted what she was offered as a trade in, her car was worth no where near what she wanted I think the dealer was adopting the age old practice of giving a high value on the trade in but giving no or little discount on the new car.

No knowledge/opinions of the car but, picking up the point from the previous post - why not get the average of several straight (unsweetened) trade-in prices from the various sites that provide them - whatCar, Parkers, Wisebuyers etc. (hope that isn't advertising!) perhaps then you'll be able to judge whether the dealer's trade-in price was plain vanilla.

Get your neighbour to ask for a deal including and excluding the trade in. The difference is what he is actually being offered for the car and thats what he should look for from you.

HJ tested one a while back. Sounds excellent:
"A bit later on I got a chance to drive the 166ps 2.3 litre petrol engined Mazda 6 Sport AWD Activematic estate. And sure enough, Yorkshire threw all it could at the car on a wet and foggy winters day.
So it was the perfect test for a car, which Mazda seems to have pitched directly against the Subaru Legacy and Forester estates, straight at the ponyclub crowd.
I can tell you that on the twistiest, most flooded road test route known to man it didn?t miss a beat. Its 5-speed Tiptronic style Activematic autobox works the right way round: forward to change down and back to change up. 2nd is good for 65mph, which is a bit high for pulling Rice trailers or caravans, and 5th gives 30mph per 1,000 rpm so caravanners will need to select 4th or burn out their torque converters. But handling is surefooted and really safe, with very little of the understeer a Legacy can be prone to.
I also got to try the AWD off road, in a field so saturated you suffered rising damp just walking to the car. While it was no Range Rover, or even Audi All Roader, it was good enough not to dig itself in as any normal car surely would have.
So it is a good car. It should be quite a good tow car (towing limit a useful 1,600kg). And it?s a nicer drive than a Legacy. But it won?t tow a pony trailer out of a boggy field. And it is up against the new Forester as well as the Legacy."
Better than a Legacy - steady on!

Falkirk Bairn - as you know Mazda well, then perhaps you could ask the service manager or even a senior mechanic at your local dealer for their opinion?

It is serviced at an Independent - the last time I was @ a Mazda Franchise garage was at 24mths old for its 2nd year servicing - since then my local Independent has serviced the car.
It has required 1 repair (other than tyres/exhaust/brakes etc) a replacement pulley on the crankshaftas this had broken a belt - £150 as the engine had to be dropped /tilted a little to gain access. Hence my 99% happy with the car in 8 yrs - with that minor blemish to a perfect record I can only be 99% happy and not 100%.
My original request was on the actual Mazda 6 Sport4 or other petrol estate models not on Mazda cars as a whole.

Good car till you have transmission concerns.

Difficult one to value, but as mentioned, see what sort of deal is being offered & then BUY IT!!
You'll not find another, as described, as easily ever again!!

...and my suggestion applied to that model specifically. I would expect that if you asked a Mazda dealer person about Mazda's as a whole then they would (hopefully) be very positive.
I would be concerned about how unique the AWD system is, but maybe it's sold more widely in Japan - they do some stange 4WD vehicles there, like Honda Jazz, for example.
If the system is very narrowly used, then getting parts could be a nightmare, maybe even impossible.

Wasn't the only UK Mazda6 with 4WD the MPS with 2.3 turbo petrol and a manual gearbox. This sounds like an import or am I wrong? All sorts available in Japan and easily imported as they drive on the left too. In fact their MOT writes off cars around 3 years old.
