I noticed that Halfords have their own brand oil on special offer, five litres of 10/40 SL spec semi-synthetic for £15.99. Seems a reasonable price for average cars. May buy a couple for the next 6 month oil changes. Does anyone know of a better deal?

German Swedish & French sell Fuchs 10W - 40 semi-synth at about £13 for 5 liters.

That's a better deal, £13.96 including VAT if you buy it in person from your nearest branch of GSF. Or you can get two 5l packs incl postage for £29.99 from Opie on the web.

Wait for Halfords BOGOFF is my system.

Yes, wait till the August Bank Holiday and Halfords will probably do their usual BOGOF. Late Summer Holiday (excl. Scotland)
scheduled 27 August 2007 from 00:00 to 23:59.
Failing that, you can get oil from Vauxhall dealer really cheap on a special offer if you buy 4 x 5 litre cans. Last time I asked, I think it was £27 for 4x5l synthetic. £44 for 4x5l fully synthetic.

wow that sounds really cheap - I asked a few days ago, they wanted £160 for 20L. (5-30W)
when do they run these promotions?

When you've got a car worth thousands (perhaps tens of thousands) of pounds I'd sooner primarily consider the quality of the oil rather than the price. However, chacun a son gout .........

When you've got a car worth thousands (perhaps hundreds) of pounds I'd sooner consider the quality of the oil AND the price.
After all, you can pay £33+ for 4 litres of Castrol synthetic oil or £13 for 5 litres of semi synthetic - or even less if a BOGOF- and if your car only needs semi synthetic, you are wasting £20 an oil change. Over 5 changes that's £100.
It's like buying petrol or diesel.. or anything. You can over time save £000s by careful buying.. and do your car no harm.
Of course.. if you cann afford a £50k new car, you won't do your own oil changes so irrelevant.

I quite agree madf. There is money to be made in marketing oil as there is in anything else.
Oil is easy though. Unlike washing up liquid, it comes with a specification. Read the vehicle manual, look at what it says on the can and then make your choice.
That's what specifications are for.

"consider the quality of the oil rather than the price"
But if it's the same oil...

One of the wonders of marketing is to convince you that it isn't.

CJay, I paid £44 for exactly the same oil you were quoted £160 for, I hope this didn't damage my engine! ;o) It just shows the markup they make!
It is a permanent Trade Club offer, I am not in the trade club, but have been repeatedly given the offer at 3 Vauxhall dealers over time. Just ask if they still do the special offer if you buy 4 x 5l. They will know what you mean, as they sell loads and loads like this. If they question you further, tell them you're a taxi driver, and they may ask which firm (say the biggest in your area) they are bound to have trade club membership and they will just choose this on the system. You will get the oil in a sealed cardboard box of 4 cans.

What does BOGOF mean????? - if it's different to what I think it means??
