I recently got the sad news that my GE Money Everyday card that gives 3% cashback on fuel is being discontinued so have been hunting around for something to replace it.
Most of you may have already noticed this, but if you buy fuel at Asda and pay with an Asda credit card, you get 2p per litre off.
This isn't a huge saving for me although worth having as I often fill up there, but I thought this may be of interest to some of the higher milers on the forum, after all, wherever you are, you won't be far from an Asda!

My local Shell is already 2p a litre cheaper than the local Asda.

It's vice versa here! :-)

here too - Asda 91.9/l Shell 93.9/l

91.9 ???
Here in surrey its 95.9 at tesco and thats the cheapest :(
I have petrolpricescom email me the 5 cheapest places each day - thats a handy facility when you travel a lot ;)
|
SWMBO spends more than £50 a week at the local Sainsburys in West Sussex and currently gets a 5p per litre off voucher which is quite handy when the last fill of the Accord was 48 litres and the pump price is 96.9 p.
Don't know how long the offer is due to last though.

The only reason that I bother with a Credit Card is because I tend to pay more into it than I spend on it, which builds up into a little credit lump that I transfer to a savings account, that way I know that even if it's a tight month there's always money for petrol or an unexpected bill. The icing on the cake is a discount off fuel :-)

I put Asda Diesel in the Jag the other week. Made it a very poorly pussy indeed. The throttle delay on pulling away was horrendous. Back to Shell or if I really must BP & it was fine!
|
I'm fussy about diesel, but I've never noticed any difference with petrol between supermarket and branded.

I run one of my cars on Asda diesel-the other on Asda petrol-never had the slghtest problem with either. The four major petrol stations in our town-Tesco,Asda,Sainsbury and Esso-all charge exactly the same.

Blue - If Shell petrol stations are convenient for you and reasonably priced the old Shell Visa Card (which gave points enabling money off vouchers) has now been replaced by a "Shell Citi Mastercard" this card pays 3% cashback on Shell fuel purchases and 1% on everything else bought using the card.
Wether this works for you depends on the price/convenience of Shell versus the other retailers that you might use.
Luckily for me the 2 closest filling stations on my usual routes are both Shell and sufficiently close to a Tesco that they nearly always price match the supermarket. Plus the fuel is recommended by HJ as having a higher detergent content than most others.
If Shell isn't convenient, have a look at the Moneysavingexpert website run by Martin Lewis and you can see what the current "best cashback credit card" is paying. Then you are not tied to one outlet for fuel and can get decent cashback.

Our Asda is 91.9 pump price for 95 unleaded, making it 89.9 on my Asda card which also gives an additional 0.5% on purchases - ie a real price of 89.45 - cheapest branded locally is Esso at 93.9 - £2.22 difference on a 50 litre fill.
|
Not any longer-Asda have just changed their card conditions-you get your 2p.and nothing else on fuel. The other discount is now only on card use in shops.
|
|
I won't use supermarket diesel, particularly in the Renault.
That said, the supermarkets are rarely the cheapest round here anyway (customer offers notwithstanding). There are two specific stations (one Esso and one Shell) that are consistently the cheapest forecourt prices, currently 91.9/93.9 for Unleaded/Diesel. Sainsbury's and Tesco are 93.9/95.9
Cheers

Unfortunately the nearest convienient Shell station is half way across the city so I only ever use it if I happen to be passing at the same time as I run out of fuel, I normally find BP is the only branded station that I use on a regular(ish) basis, but since returning to petrol I rarely use it as often.

after all wherever you are you won't be far from an Asda!
I live 131 miles from my nearest Asda :-)
|
I buy my fuel at Morrisons and take advantage of their Morrisons Miles card whereby every so often they give me a fiver voucher.
But not sure how many litres / pounds I need to buy for each fiver, however it is something for nothing as they are always identical price to the other petrol station in my area, a Shell.

I have the GE card too, and have done quite well out of it during the past year. Bizarrely, they're not just discontinuing the cashback element; they're closing everyone's account. If you want to remain a GE customer, you have to apply for a different card. At least it saves the bother of cancelling.
Thanks to the excellent moneysavingexpert.com, I happen to know that the next best thing to the GE card is a platinum Barclaycard, which pays 2 per cent cashback on food and fuel. This is marginally better than the Asda card, until fuel hits the £1 per litre threshold again. Unfortunately you can't apply for this card if you're an existing customer.
Of course there's no point in having a cashback card unless you always pay off the balance in full. If you don't, any cashback will be more than outweighed by the interest payable.
|
Thanks to Blue I got a GE Card about a year ago and have done very well by using it for almost everything and clearing the balance every month. I too was disappointed to find that it is going but I have applied for a Barcalys Platinum Card thru the MoneySupermarket website and that gives a cashback but not quite as good as GE. Thanks again Blue!

>>Thanks again Blue!
No problems, pleased to have helped at least a couple of fellow BRer's, sounds as though you've found a better replacement than I have, although from the sounds of things I wouldn't be able to get the Platinum as I have an existing Barclaycard that I never use, doubt they would see me as a Platinum customer! :-) Besides, my income is at the lower end of what is acceptable for most platinum cards so that would also work against me!
I found that I did really well from the GE card when I bought my MG, I bought it from a small garage that had a petrol forecourt and paid the £650 balance on the GE card, yep, I got 3% cashback on the whole amount! I also paid for my car insurance with it (£1200) and due to an error with how the card was setup, got 3% on that too! :-)

Last year, filled up the wife's car at Tesco, went to pay, no wallet, filled in form - no problem
Returned later that afternoon, and filled up my car- went into pay, by c/c for both amounts and get IOU recinded. Then proffered the 5p litre off, and saved the max £5, but as c/c had gone through got the discount in cash - result
