I have a 1992 Citroen BX19TXD automatic. The suspension has suffered a number of leaks and pipes have been replaced by the main dealer over a period of months On the last occasion they could not get the front and back suspension to work together as self levelling. Either the front remained static while the back rose and fell or the front rose and fell while the back remained static. It was left with the front static and the rear operating normally but at the correct road height.
The car behaved reasonably well for about two months but then the suspension became solid. The rear suspension jolts violently all the time - there is no suspension by the feel of it. The impression is that the system is not working but, when static, the suspension responds to the movement of the height adjustment lever. The front suspension responds in jerks whereas the rear moves smoothly.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and, if so, the solution?

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Probably got a couple of problems here. if it goes up and down using the lever in the car, there won't be too much wrong with the actual hydraulics. the jerking at the front as it rises will be down to worn struts. not a bad job to change - but expensive using new parts. The hardness at the back will likely be down to the spheres. (Green er ... spheres.. under the back end.) The gas that provides the "spring" leaks out over time. Either find a friendly Citroen specialist who can recharge them - or buy some new ones. Ebay seems cheap for them now! If you do have a good Citroen specialist nearby they will quite likely have some good struts for the front. Always better to know their good before fitting if possible! As the other poster said - there are some excellent forums for the BX - follow their link.

Theres a company in Manchester who can fit the 5 spheres for around £125 all in. I'd say get the reservior checked to see if there's a blockage to the rear suspension BX club also has an entire list of specialists.

If the suspension is sitting at normal ride height, it will as has been suggested be the spheres, otherrwise it could be hitting the bump stops.
