in a previous post I asked about vibration from the clutch, but now that I have had chance to take the newly aquired 166 TS for a long run of 200 miles I have come to the conclusion that what I thought was some low end vibration from the clutch or drive train is in-fact rough running. The exhaust is particularly throaty/bordering on excessively noisy (well in comparison with my old 164), especially under hard acceleration or when pulling up hill etc, it has a slight vibration right through the rev range but again worse under acceleration and worst of all it is only returning 25mpg at a steady 75 (Well according to the trip computer anyway). I intend to check out the exhaust etc in daylight, but it has had a complete new exhaust in the last 18 months, so unless it's at the manifold (or gasket) I don't think it's that...could it be a need for new plugs, a fueling issue or the Lamda sensors... apparently these also wear out regularly!
Comments, help or suggestions welcome...or have I bought a lemon already?

The plugs get neglected due to the fact they are not very easy to get at and the cost of one set being pretty unique to Alfa is very expensive if I remember one set is around £55 and the other about £15 plus the coils which are prone to malfunction at around £40 a piece.I have run two 166's and never had a Lamda sensor go but I have replaced a clutch, plugs, coils, front and rear discs, front wheel bearings and drivers door electric window mechanism(in fact I welded up the old one because the spot welds had come apart.

thanks, I have been through the service history (which is extensive). The plugs were changed at 60K as expected, but as a replacement engine was fitted recently that had done 56K, not sure if old plugs were swapped over, new ones fitted or it came with plugs, so could be a starting point. WOULD this give the symptoms I describe...when running it sounds like the exhaust is holed or has a loose baffle and the consumption is down to 25mpg on a steady run

I doubt it Alfa exhausts are a bit throaty but its more than likly a loose baffle or the like. The mpg at 25 is about all you will get if I remember correctly mine averaged around 22 and dropped to around 17 if you wellied it.

what only mid 20's MPG out of a 2L TS.???? I'm sure I used to get around 30+ out of my 164 with same engine, but that was a company car & it was a while ago, so I may just have forgotten.

With the 166 twin spark they sacrficed economy for performance.

Once new a chap from an Alfa dealer. Best mpg he could get was 27.
Exaust noise - could be that the replacement exhaust does not fit perfectly over the stub from the catalytic convertor and no matter how hard it is tightened, there is still a gap all the way around.

Try running the car with two tank-fulls of shell optimax. Better quality fuels make a difference with my 1.6 TS especially at cold start until the engine has warmed up.

exhaust isn't blowing as there is massive back pressure when you put a rag over the tailpipe, however the exhaust gas seems extremely hot...enough to scorch the rag after a few seconds, is this normal on a TS. Would an Examiner run show up things like Lambda sensor failure, timing out or exhaust problems?
