(yr 2000) Automatic Gearbox Problem - natlol
Hi all, a few weeks ago i was driving back from the supermarket...was doing about 50ish on a National Speed limit road...came round a bend and the road was totally flooded....I slammed on the anchors and hit the water which obviously slowed me right down...i stamped on the accelarator and the car carried on through it...the water was just below the bonnet line i think.

My problem started immediately after..when selecting between drive and neutral or reverse a distinct clonk appeared...then over the weekend the car would randomly stop engaging first when i came to a stop. I hoped it would dry out but on Monday I broke down and the car struggles to move when i engage drive or reverse.
After some testing the car drives fine until it reaches operating temperature and then the gearbox wont engage first and goes into 3rd,

The car is a Phase 3 Xreg Automatic with only 30K on the clock so dont really wanna scrap it. The auto gearbox is not displaying any warning lights about low fluid etc and its not even gone into emergency drive home mode.

The car has been checked by my friends garage and he has taken it to an auto specialist. who has checked fluid pressures etc and say the gearbox has gone faulty. I have also been told that if i can find a gearbox its not a diy job because it has to be setup on a computer or something.
I have been quote up to a max of 1500 for a brand new gearbox and not much less to fit a recon. What should I do?

Slight tweak to subject line to include year - correct me if I'm wrong on the year ! - PU

Did they actually drain and replace the (presumably contaminated) fluid? Always a good idea to try that first.

i dont think they did. He tested the fluid and the pressures or something. It wasnt like he was trying to get me to have a new box either he just told me to scrap it as he had seen this time and time before and it wasnt worth repairing. It just seems to sad to scrap a 36k car. I mean it is mint not a mark on it so i might pay the money to have a new box. Its only a years depreciation on any new car i buy.
