Hello forum,
I'm after a bit of advice. My 03 plate Focus 1.8 tdci broke down last week and after a week and a half of trying to figure out the problem, the garage has told me it is the ecu which controls the immobiliser on the fuel pump. Said they'd only ever seen one like it before. They've got to import the part as there's none in the country.
I've been quoted £1,100 to repair the problem. Does this sound right?
I'm a complete girl when it comes to cars, so I'm a bit worried about being ripped off.

The high pressure fuel pump itself is expensive and there is a fair bit of labour involved in replacing it, the ECU would also be quite expensive though very little labour involved hence the figure you have been quoted sounds rather high to me.
Is it at a Ford dealer or an independent?
Perhaps describe the symptoms, what happened when the car broke down, and any actions you had taken shortly prior to that?

There are companies that will test & even repair ECU's, bba-reman.com being one. Do a Google search, there may be a similar company near you.

I've had the car eight months. It's given me no problems at all in the past.
On the day it broke down I turned my car round in the driveway, got out, and locked up. No noticeable noises or problems
Five minutes later I got in, and tried to start the car and it wouldn't start.
The battery was making all the right noises - it was turning over, just not 'connecting'/ firing.
Sorry I can't give you a better description. I've had battrery problems in previous cars and it sounded nothing like that.

There is no immobilizer on the fuel pump of a TDCi. That was the old-type Ford diesel with the rotary pump.
Get it taken to a diesel specialists for a second opinion. [About 80% of this sort of fault is cam position sensor failure.]
