06 Avensis 2.2 D4D hatchback
I had my towbar & electrics fitted by a professional company but the interior lights fuse blows. Toyota dealership says the feed is taken from the boot light so the circuit is overloaded, towbar company says its 'in the manual and should work'. Where should the feed be taken from? Direct from battery, via a fused link?

What manual? That could be the clue I think ? Manual issued by Toyota or by towbar company?

IIRC a caravan fridge can drain up to 10A (my interior lamp fuse on the Mondeo is only 7.5A), so I suspect that the interior lamp circuit is not adequate to run the fridge directly. Maybe they've incorrectly wired the socket directly to the lamp instead of using the lamp circuit to energise a relay with a separate 10A rated live feed from elsewhere (fusebaox or battery).

I think you're right; the garage gave me the 25amp fuse from the boot light-to-socket wire but wouldn't say where any other feed could be taken from. I had a Haynes manual, for a previous Carina E, which showed where to get a feed (via ignition or 'always on') from a fuse box but there's no Haynes for the current Avensis.

You are way out with the wiring.
Just checked my Haynes caravan Manual (sad I know!) There should be a 2.5mm cable feed from the battery to the socket with a minimum 15Amp fuse
Better still, standard practice is a split charge relay which will feed direct from the battery and have an ignition controlled live which is similar to your boot light cable.
Unless Toyota have built in a suitable cable in the wiring loom to the rear of the car then check your battery or fuse holder to see if any additional cable and fuse holder/fuse has been added which runs to the back of the car.
As I say a split charge relay should be a standard fit.

your tow-bar fitters might be a professional company but they're still cowboys - check round the back for their horses.
The feed for the fridge should come from the battery via a split charge relay as above and have a careful check of the work they've done 'just in case'

If your professional tow bar fitters cannot do the job right and make it work then I would be asking for a refund.

Others are right, you need a split charge relay feed to the fridge. If your van is post 1999, pin 7 in the grey socket needs to be earthed; that gives the fridge its own earth, separate to anything else. Pre- '99 the fridge earth is shared.
Fridge supply through the interior lights? Whatever were the towbar company thinking?

I suggest a quick call to the Caravan Club, they have a good technical department and should be able to help.

If it's any comfort toyou, Nissan don't seem any better. On my X-Trail, they wired the caravan elctricals to the car's interior light circuit. Not surprisingly, the caravan fridge blew the fuse without fail. What irritated me particularly is that the boot is fitted with a 120watt socket intended to supply, for example, a portable fridge!

Thanks for this - you've triggered a recolletion, a couple of years back my local Toyota franchise displayed (Toyota) chiller boxes in the boot. Maybe there's a connector (for an optional boot cigar lighter socket) hidden away some place or perhaps the lead had to run through the split rear seats to the power outlet at the back of the centre console.
