'02 Alfa 2.4 JTD: CR? type of fuel pump? - andymc {P}
According to the CBCB, the 2.4 JTD engine fitted in the Alfa 156 was uprated to 150 bhp in June 2002. It's described as being "direct injection" at that stage, whereas the words "common rail" are only used in relation to the engine introduced in September 2003, with a power output of 175 bhp.
Two questions: first of all, was the earlier (pre- Sept '03) 2.4 JTD common rail or not? Secondly, what type of fuel pump was fitted in that car?

my sister had a 53 2.4jtd fantastic for performance but it wasn't the 175bhp only the 150 & I think it was normal injection fitted with bosch pump & electronic throttel I think. Used to sound fantastic when taken out for an italian

I'm no Alfa expert but I think your car would be a common rail. I think the 175bhp engine used the same injection system but a 20V head. I'm prepared to be corrected on this though....

PS: When I say 'your car' I mean pre-2003 2.4JTD. I think they would all be CR.

IIRC all 156 diesels were CR from launch, the 2.4 being 140, then 150 and 20v 175 bhp. Characterful though not particularly torquey for the capacity.

Are these VM engines?
'02 Alfa 2.4 JTD: CR? type of fuel pump? - tr7v8
No nothing to do with VM, it's a GM/Fiat joint development. The first engines were 136BHP, commonly called 140, then they changed in 2000 to a VNT variable geometry turbo which gave 150, this engine ran for ages, then they bought out the 175BH 20 valve engine. All are CR.
Injection parts are are Bosch unfortunately as most of the issues centre around these, so MAF, HP & LP Pumps. Turbos certainly on the early ones are Garrett. The 1.9 is 4/5ths of a JTD & these from memory went 115BHP, 140 & 150.
All are a fantastic engine, reliable apart from the German bits, do 72K on a Cam belt & AFAIK have no know problems. Valves adjust on the 10V engines are manual but typically don't need doing more than every 60K or so. The 20V 2.4 is now ratd in the 159 at 200BHP.
The engines are used in Fiats, Alfas, Lancias, Vauxhalls, Opels, SAABs & various van versions including Iveco.
