I have a November 2004 Renault Scenic 1.9dci dynamique. The air con does not seem very cold (although we have not had much hot weather to warrant switching it on) I have an RS Thermocouple measuring instrument that I could measure the temperature. Does anyone know what sort of reading I should expect and where should I be putting the probe to measure the temp? Also if the reading is low will Renault repair or more probably re-charge the system (car is still under 3 year manufaturers warranty) or is this considered a service item, which is down to the customer?

AC should be used all year around, and not when it's warm. Reason being, lubricating oils are inside along with the gas and if the AC isn't used regularly, then rubber seals and the like dry out and they'll end up leaking.

Lecture over, you should be getting a recording of approx 5 deg C at the dash vents.
If the system is low on gas through natural leakage, then it's not a warranty item. You will have to have it recharged at your own expense. Kwikfit now offer an AC top up service for £45.
See this recent thread for comments on the service Kwik Fit offer:-

Thanks for that info. I was aware about switching the aircon on to lubricate the seals. This has been done at least weekly since new

Another tip to get to a cooler temperature quicker, is to switch on the air recycle, so that the cooler air inside gets drawn through the vents again.

Main Dealer should do this no one else as the car is still under waranty they should do it for free but if they can't find a leek will probably just put die in and have you drop back in next week to check again with a uv light to see if they can see a leek. you tell them someone else has been in there and bang goes any warranty on any of your air con pits as you don't know what oil someone else has put in there.

I measured the temperature at the vents yesterday and it was 20 degrees, no change with the aircon switched on. On my Audi the temperature is less than 5 degress when aircon switched on. Also I notice that the engine revs appear to be the same when aircon switched on . I know on previous cars the revs go up, if only momentarily when the pump is switched on ( although it is difficult to be certain because the scenic rev counter is an LCD bar indicator) I will take MerlinTec advice and get the car booked into dealer as I`m sure Renault would declare warranty null and void if evidence of previous work in that area.

Bob in the three years I had my Scenic, the air con broke twice.
Both times the dealer said not warranty and chargeable. Took to a private air con dealer and first timehe diagnosed what was wrong and that it should be covered under warranty. Took back to dealer told them what theexpert had said and it was duly covered under warranty.
Just before I sold it the air con was poor again. Back to same guy who re-gassed it and this made a huge difference. An easy way to tell is if the pipe coming from the air con unit goes cold (its under the engine on the drivers side). When air con was regassed and switched to cold, this pipe was (almost) freezing cold.
Regas was £40.
IIRC the compressor won't start if the gas is too low so just because you aren't hearing it not kicking in, doesn't mean that its not just a simple re-gas required.
