I am babysitting my son-in-laws Audi 80 K reg while he is in Afgan. Takes ages to fill up at pump sometimes pump will time out it takes that long. Also fuel gauge is not reliable any suggestions welcome as he is home on leave soon

Does it do it at all fuel pumps?
Anyway is it really a time out or is the pump clicking as it is detecting too much vapour returning up the filler pipe. Fuel tanks have a venting system that often connects to the filler pipe, if this is blocked in any way, then may get filling problems. Other options maybe an actual blockage in the filler pipe. If not mechanical minded probably need a mechanic to look over the tank and check filler pipe. Can you get a plastic tube down the filler pipe with no obstruction?
If guage is not reliable, might be reading low when it is really full ?

Thanks for your tip, tried to access breather pipe but not sure how to as book i have says tank is in boot, but it actualy lies under car breadth ways.
I have found access panel to sender unit but could not find breather pipe.
Would appreciate help, as i would like to say " I FIXED IT "

I find that my Audi 80 takes time to fill up, it cannot take the 'full' trigger, so try just slow fueling.
The fuel guage problem, a common fault, is normally due to the 'voltage stabiliser' behind the instrument panel. The temperature guage is normally effected aswell.
Hope this helps.

Breather pipe - not familar with Audi 80s, but generally need to look under car and follow route of filler pipe and see if any other pipes connect to it. It could possibly be built into the filler pipe itself.
I too have had slow filling cars normally due to the fact that there has been a few bends in the filler pipe design meaning that fuel cannot flow at the maximum rate dispensed out by pump.
However it is never been so slow that it is a major problem.
If there are no obstructions in filler pipe or breather pipe, then I guess there is very little you can do if, as suggested, it is a characteristic of the Audi 80.
If you find any obstruction, be careful not to push it into the tank, as it could block the fuel lines or filter.
