Pug 205GTi 1.6 - Low tickover & cut out. - wot_the_dickens
Good morning gentleman,

I wonder whether you could offer some advice regarding my 1990 H plate 205GTI 1.6.
I've had numerous probs with my girl; I've spent best part of a grand on her, she?s well worth the hassle but I?m in a bit of a fix at the mo. Here?s the thing....

When i start her majesty her idling isn?t right, it can sort itself out with a bit of persuasion from my right foot gently lifting the revs, however, when we're tottering down the road together and we come to some traffic lights, I apply the brake and the revs drop off and she cuts out. Now most of you are probably thinking it?s the idle valve, but there?s something else to add to the mix, at night, when the headlights are on, or I?ve got the wipers on, it?s simply a struggle to keep her going at all as the revs just are far too low. So that made me think there was a short somewhere, but interestingly my massive sub doesn?t affect it, nor does the stereo of the changer, or the satnav plugged into the lighter. I?ve had the alternator tested and its perfect, I?ve also had the ECU plugged into a diagnostic, but it cant be read, which is disturbing, the diagnostic just says to turn the ignition on - when it already is.

So, I've taken it to a couple of places now but with her being a pug, they aint sure. So I ask you, the experts to give a girl a hand to sort her majesty out and get her out of her chompy mood.

Cheers

buy a new battery - had something similar with the Previa, electronic fuel injection is very fussy.

given that those electrical bits that cause problems are attached to the engine and those that don't, aren't, then check the earth strap from the engine to the chassis.

Ahh gentleman, you think me too much of a girly. Already personally fitted a new battery, dizzy cap, rotor arm, sparks, leads....shes had a new starter too, told ya - ive spent a lot of mula on the old bird, just cant narrow this one down.

I would carefully check the earth leads, earth points and connectors for the ecu.

Fuel pump? electric? checked the feed and earth for that?

Hiya

havent checked the fuel pump as yet, Ive been told a number of things. My mate had one of a similar year and he reckons it simply a bad earth on a headlight - but my opinion differs. Martin, my mechanic, isnt sure, he seems to think its the idle valve playing up. I've been recommended to go to my local expert test and tune, but i cant see how they are going to figure it out as they specialise in diagnostic through the ECU, may have to take has to the auto eletricians, I just dont want them giving me a huge bill for something i didnt need. I will check the earth off the ECU, unfortunatly - as with most 205's its in the most inaccessable place!
Thanks very much guys

My Friend had a 205GTI back in the early 90's.
Apparently every service Peugeot had adjust some sort of valve (she said Butterfly valve) which affected the mix in order to get through the emissions test. However the idle became very lumpy as the car got older (then she sold it) and Peugeot said it was at the end of its adjustment.
Sorry can't be anymore specific..perhaps it was an early form of EGR valve..? Have you tried the 205 owner net sites? IF this valve is the idle valve you refer to...then please ignore all this!! But I am sure she said it was on the lower half of the engine not the injection system.

hmm, unsure. the valve is on the front of the engine with the throttle cable...

You will need to find a specialist [old and grizzled by now] who really understands how to set the idling up on these. The 1.9 was a trial - the 1.6 was a nightmare! Probably the most tricky and sensitive there ever was. Even when new they were never smooth for long.

First; what petrol do you run it on? They don't run on unleaded.

Are the valve clearances spot-on?
What are the compression figures?
Is the timing absolutely correct? [Valve and ignition?.]
Is the throttle body spotless?
Is the idle bypass channel choked?
Has the idle screw been mullahed? [Is it corroded solid?]
Is the resistance track in the volume air-flow meter worn out? [Almost certain at that age.]
Is the idle switch still functional?
Has it still got the original air filter? [It matters.]
What's the idle CO figure? [It won't idle at the "official one.]
What idle speed/mixture are they trying to achieve? [1100 @ 2% CO may help.]

Try all of that - and when it still doesn't work, don't be too surprised.

Spot on Screwloose!
Just to add my 6d worth
If the mixture is too rich the engine stalls when coming down to idle. Common cause is a weak clock spring tin the Airflow meter (AFM) which can be retensioned using the gear under the black cover to give about 2-3%CO with the mixture screw 2-3 turns out from full rich. If the oil is old ar the engine is worn and fumy through the breathers you are wasting your time.
The tachos always over read, 1100 is about right.
The vac units on the dis fail giving an air leak into the plenum chamber.
The Pug doesnt have an idle speed controller only an extra air valve for fast idle which usually fail open causing the throttle bypass to be screwed down too much. With the engine warm clamp the smaller hose coming into the elbow just after the AFM, if the revs drop its broken.
Max CO at idle should be no more than 2% ,preferably less, more than that and she will stall when the throttle is shut.

when i had my old gti i had something similer, it was caused by the hoses in front of the inlet manifold being perished, once they were replaced and the co was retuned it was spot on, although to be fair it's the only one ive ever seen with a smooth idle

I think your best bet is to join the "http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/" which has specialised people who all have the same problems with their 205 GTI and will be better suited to suggest what to check with your Problem.

One thing you mentioned about stalling when you apply the brake, this points to having a weak mixture where when you apply the brake and extra air is drawn fron the servo system which the engine cant cope with its mixture as set so it gets so weak it stalls. Also a common fault with these at this age is the Carbon track in the Air Flow Meter (AFM) where it gets worn and it will cause problems like you are experiencing. But if you join the site as suggested, you can find out how to get around the Track problem as I have done with my 205 GTI.

Good Luck
