Astra ´99 1.8 16v-100k-Cambelt? - barchettaman
Our ´99 Astra has done just over 100k miles.
It´s got the 1.8 16V petrol engine.
Its cambelt and pulleys were changed at 62k, in Feb 2004.
Should I get the cambelt done now, or wait until it hits 120k?

Any advice gratefully received.

16v Vauxhalls should have cambelt, rollers, tensioner and water pump replaced every 40,000 miles.

I'd certainly do belt, tensioner & pulleys every 40K, I think the water pump is a bit more debatable, about 100 quid extra from a VX dealer to change that as well, the risk is down to you of course.

My local VX dealer don't change the water pump as a matter of course, in fact they took some peruading it was worth changing - reckon they can tell when the pump is going from the normal services and just change when required, I didn't trust them that far.

If you're already having the cambelt replaced, the extra for the water pump is low just £25 for the pump, all the labour's been done.

Avoid dealers and independents that use "menu pricing", they'll just add up the two jobs which means you'll be paying for the labour twice!

The following link contains servicing schedules / cambelt changes for the Astra-G, as recommended by Vauxhall in May 2004. As far as I am aware the dates / intervals mentioned have not since changed.

The pump was around 65 quid ( VX dealer), the labour isn't already done because you need to drain & replace the coolant, hence around 100 quid extra :-/

You *should* be able to get a good quality waterpump (Quinton Hazel for example) from a motor factors for less that £65.

As the waterpump sits quite high up in the engine, you lose very little coolant when you remove it. Unless the coolant does need changing, all the system needs is a small top up after the work has been carried out.

Last year I paid £25.67 incl Vat for a genuine GM water pump, from AutoVaux, for my X18XE1 Astra very similar to the OP.
