Hi All
Some woman in a Mazda 6 rear ended my miggy this morning on the way to work. She hit me good and hard - her airbags went off and it took two tow trucks to winch the cars apart. My car is 8 years old, so given that and the damage my insurers have decided it's a write-off. Which is a shame, really. I'd got it all sorted (after 4 and half years of ownership) and it was running nicely with everything working.
It's a 1999 pre-facelift 2.5V6 CDX Omega saloon, petrol, manual with 96K on the clock. How much do you think I be should looking for as an insurance settlement?
I wonder what I should replace it with? What decent sized saloon or hatchback would fit the bill? It's going to have to be something not too expensive (maybe £7K/£8K certainly no more than £10K) and SWMBO has said I should have something cheaper to run. I suppose a Mondeo (diesel?) would be a sensible second hand option but (no offence to anyone) the thought of owning one of those doesn't really do it for me - and that from Vauxhall driver :D
Cheers

At risk of getting the "dont touch one with a bargepole" brigade going have you thought about a Saab? Either a 95 as the obvious comparison with the Omega or a 93 if you want to go down size slightly.
I am on my second 93 and know a good number of happy Saab drivers (they are reasonably priced on our company list).
Key thing is probably to have access to a decent local dealer or specialist for servicing etc

£2,000 tops, looking on AT.

Sorry to hear the reason for your post.
A couple of places that might help with TRUE values & also a couple of sources for disposing/repairing, if the insurance gives you the 'salvage'.

As for value, the £2000 is probably about right - although there are plenty of nice ones around, they don't come up for sale, too often, so replacing with the same, or a bit newer, would be a bit difficult
I've not decided what I'd have, after my CDX estate, decides to find a new home. Considerations have been...
Mazda 6 estate (not the one that hit you, though, thanks!!)
Zafira - new shape.
Galaxy
406 SW
Vectra estate - new shape

£1500 was the figure that came to mind straight away, but you might be able to get more. Find trade adverts of similar cars, and if the prices are favourable (ie highish), show the ad's to your insurers. This sometimes helps.

Hi Scotty, sorry to hear of your misfortune - hope you get a decent payout from the insurance company.
As for sub £10k saloons, and assuming you want a refined, relaxed drive, then I would recommend an Avensis. I suspect the 2.2 D4-D that I would recommend is still not appearing below £10k, and I don't think the original 2.0 D4-D is particularly refined, so how about a 2.0 or even 2.4 petrol model? Don't know how much the lack of a 6th gear hampers the motorway cruising though. Here's a nice looking 2.4 auto on ebay: tinyurl.com/35jemb

Thanks for all the info and suggestions.
I'm thinking the SAAB option sounds interesting.
Just had a Mondeo 130 diesel hire car delivered to keep me going. It might give time to come to terms with one - we'll see.

Just before the Saab knockers arrive ( don't worry, they won't be long) I've got a 9-5 and I'm very happy with it.

Sorry to be dull, but I'd suggest a post-facelift Omega.
I didn't like it at first, but you do get used to the change in the interior very quickly. You'll get the same driving experience and at auction, you'll pay under £3K for even the latest ones they made.
Alternatively, follow my route and go for a 3/4 year old Jag S Type. RWD, and a step up from the Omega for £8K in my case for a 3Yo with 95K on the clock. Still feels brand new.

Everything on Auto trader that age is retailing at under or at around a grand so expect an offer of around £700 from the insurance,it would have fetched around £500 at auction if it was nice.

Hi - just thought I'd add an update.
I've just received the first insurance offer of £2,495 which, to be honest, is more than I was expecting. I was going to try and hold out for £2K so I think I'll just accept what they've offered and count my blessings.
As far as a replacement is concerned I'm still looking but, following the advice from a later thread, I'm thinking of a 5-series - a 530d if I can find a good within my budget.
Cheers
