Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - daveyK_UK
The Sirion has now hit 60,045 miles in it 1.0 engine.

And may I add - 60,045 trouble free miles.

The car is a joy to own,
averages 61mpg including a 40 mile motorway round-trip each day
Carries 5 adults with ease - 5 doors as standard a big plus
Enough power for around town
Air con is great
Handles with ease - very easy to park
good, easy to use while driving stereo.

an aboslute delight to own and run - highly recomended. Done nothing to it, except the service.

Downside -
bit noisy if going over 90mph

We are considering another one (now only £6500!) depending on what they give me as trade in for the hyundai elantra.

That's a heck of a lot of miles in circa 18 months! I think I would prefer something a little quieter and more perceived comfort? for that mileage.
Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - MichaelR
How on earth do you cope with a car like that on the Motorway so often? 60k in 18 months is huge mileage - you must spend a lot of time in the car. Did the thought of buying something half decent not at any point cross your mind?
Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - bell boy
good little cars i think
bit tinny like these things are
bit basic inside (very early 90"s)
they do have a propensity to rot like heck on the floorpans/everywhere so if you intend keeping longer term and wish to save cash in the bigger picture then some protection is needed soonest, they are like k11 micras underneath metal thats primed and not much else

You try and find something for under £7,000 that can carry 4 x 6 foot 4" blokes comfortably.

It cruises fine at 75mph - and the 50mpg plus - brings a smile to your face.

Its mainly used my my staff - thus the high mileage.
Everyone loves it.

I take your point that some of the interior is mid 90's - but other bits such as the stereo are very 21st century.
The ammount of cubby holes and space is just fantastic.
Its been very cleverly designed.

And - no congestion zone fee's from next year in London - so no more parking in Milton Keynes and getting the train into London.

Not a sign of rust anywhere.
Its not tinny at all - infact thats what made me buy it.

We considered a 1.0 matiz - which did feel tinny. And the daihatsu charade was tinny.
But this is alot more like a yaris - not at all tiny.
If anything, the doors are a bit to chunky.

Would highly reccomend it.
Far more head and leg room than the hyundai getz and ford fiesta.

I am correct in thinking that the Sirion is partially based on the old Yaris? (Or I am thinking of another make?)
Personally I find these type of cars much more refined than they look, but most only have very limited boot space, meaning they may be bought by many as second cars. Does the Sirion have a slideable rear bench seat to create more boot space like the Yaris?

Used Mondeo TDCi?

I fell apart laughing when I visualised 4 6 foot blokes in a Diahatsu Sirion.

Do you also make your staff in the office sit on packing crates to save more money?

If it's being used for long journeys (which I presume it must be to have that kind of mileage) then you should be careful that you're not breaching your Duty of Care requirements as an employer.

Hi

I thought the review was good, cant see why everyone wants to slate the bloke for informing everyone how his car has performed.

Some of these small cars are very good, I have driven and own the Kia Picanto and have found it good to drive and economical. I also own a 2.0 TDCI so feel that I am able to comment.

With regards to duty of care, providing a Risk Assessment has been completed and the driver is aware of the vehicle to use then there is no problem.

Come on stop giving people a hard time just because it does not fit in with the male ego that you must have a large car.

I was partiuclarly thinking of things like:
# Is the vehicle fit for purpose?
# Is the vehicle suitable for the load it is carrying?
# Is the vehicle suitable for the driving environment, for example long distance motorway driving?

There's a bit of badge-snobbery going on as well. If it'd been a VW Polo covering that mileage they wouldn't have all come out of the woodwork. How many of them have even driven a Sirion before? (I have, before anyone asks).
Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - boxsterboy
My comments weren't intended to slate at all. It's just that a Sirion (nor Matiz, Panda, etc.) would not have been my first choice of car if I knew I would have to drive 60,000 miles in 18 months in it! I'm delighted to hear that my prejudices have been proved wrong and that the car has been both enjoyable and reliable!

You'd drive from (Central?) Milton Keynes to central London?

Do you know something about Silverlink's sucessor that the rest of us have not been told?

61mpg is nearly as good as my motorbike!

Good to hear of your experience, which seems to echo that of Tony Dron:

I hated the look of the old Sirion, but the new one looks smart and quite distinctive. A lot more room in it too, I should imagine.

Some strange replies here!

I had some lifts today in a few cars. They were super mini-size, medium size, and a big (estate) car, two were also the same brand. In terms of ride I honestly cannot say which I would prefer, there wasn't much in it. I think the small car was probably slightly more comfortable than the medium one, and the medium one probably had a slightly more refined engine than the larger one. I personally don't see why people don't like using small cars on motorways, some may suffer from wind problems etc., but most probably don't.

How can you consider it to not be 'half decent'? It's done 60k without a problem, it will cruise at illegal speeds without a problem, it is VERY cheap to run, and it will carry 5 passengers. There are probably a lot of 'decent' cars that won't do 60k without problems. It sounds like a brilliant car to me.

How would it be breaching his 'Duty of Care requirements'? It is fit for the purpose (it's done 60k without breaking). It was designed to carry upto 5 people, and if there's no unusually heavy items in the boot then he won't exceed the load limit. It must be suitable for motorway work, if people 'love it'.

It's hard work driving a little car long distances - they're just too 'lively' (although have 4 adults on board might actually improve things!) with road and wind noise, and being affected by side winds and trucks. They don't have the power to mix in with the traffic flow effortlessly. What's fun around town becomes very tiring after a couple of hours.

I did 80k over 4 years in a 3 cylinder diesel turbo daihatsu charade..from 88-92.....70mpg..no rust....no problems...zilch....solid as a rock..
Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - bell boy
did you try the petrol one of the same time? i seem to remember we got 100 mph out of one ,but then chickened out due to the noise (it was a hire car)
Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - doog
didnt try the petrol

..top speed in mine was meant to be 89mph..also had a high roof..!! looked a bit nerdy having traded in a Lancia 2000 HPE for it (just got married, house and everything with long commuter trip )

Daihatsu Sirion 55 plate - 60k report - daveyK_UK
Yes shares many yaris parts and components.

same 1.0 engine.

and unlike the perodua - built in japan.

the boot is fine for grocery shopping - but the seats fold flat for bigger loads - another key decision for buying the car.

And they take seconds to put back - very flexible car design.

As I said - this is a very well designed car.

Especially when you consider its dimensions are smaller than a KA!

I only wanted to give people an update about something positiive for once.

Normally when I am on here, i moan about the ammount of hyundai junk I have suffered in the past.
