Hi folks,
I run an X reg Astra 1.8 16V and i'm getting some nasty vibration through the steering wheel. The wheel shudders left to right.
This problem's been around for a while and i initially suspected that one of the front wheels was out of balance but i've had them balenced and the problem remains. Generally occurs at 50 - 75mph but it's not guaranteed to happen, i think its dependent upon the road surface. I've inspected the front tyres and there is a pattern of uneven wear - outside shoulder wearing more than center of tyre and inside shoulder by about 3 mm.
Is it purely a tracking issue or the sign of something else.
Tyres changed at 60k miles now up to 75k miles.
Car mechanics are not my strongest discipline but i've worked on a tractor where the track rod ends were worn and this lead to some shudders through the steering. Could this be the cause?
Many thanks for your wisdom.

uneaven wear on inside & outer edges sounds like tyres are too soft what pressure are you running at? when there worn uneaven this will make it very hard to ballance correctly.
out of shape tyres also cause this & rear tyres also. good luck
