Time to change the oil in my '99 Citroen Saxo 1.1i on 75,000 miles.

I usually use Magnatec but its expensive, especially now they started doing it in 4l cans for the same price as the old 4.5l cans...

So I was wondering if people could tell me:

Am I better off getting a "good" (branded) oil or getting a cheaper oil that is a better spec (fully synthetic???) or just getting a cheaper standard oil and changing more often... or any other options!??!

Cheers

Used Comma semi sythetic in older son's 106 for the last 60k miles (it's now done 90k,)

Fully sythetic is a waste of money.

Castrol is imo overpriced for the specification.

Change oil at service intervals, buy a decent filter , use a good semi synthetic about £14 for 5 litres..

Do you have a gsf near you?

They sell Total oils (as per used by the Citroen main dealer) and are priced £10 for 15w 40, and £12.50 for 10w 40 plus vat. And you get the full 5 litres!

My local Farmer's supplies store sells Fuchs oil. 10W-40 semi-synth to ACEA spec B4 is about £13 for 5 litres.

I use this in a Peugeot 106 diesel (TUD5 engine) with 5k oil and filter changes. It's now done 130k miles and the engine has not been touched other than for camshaft drive system maintenance. I took the lid off the other day to check the tappets - the cams and followers were all like mirrors.

Obviously this is a sample of one and any decent oil would probably give the same result with the same maintenance schedule. Use the recommended grade of oil at all costs and change it frequently.

I ran an engine a while ago for which I bought some Silkolene Osmaston 50, 30L in 5L tins, a couple of times, which was very reasonable in price, from an independent oil distributor. Try a company in that line of business (e.g. www.britishbenzol.co.uk), if you're prepared to buy a similar quantity, of whatever you want, if they stock it.

Like you I also stopped using Magnatec because of price. I use total semi synthetic from GSF.In my wifes Saxo and my Astra. I am rather obsessive about oil changes so I have saved quite a lot by doing this. I tend to think that whilst Magnatec is a quality product there is a lot of hype attached to this product (read that all semi synthetics cling in the same way).

Fuchs from www.eurocarparts.com (about £12/5 litres) or Total from GSF. Both are collection only due to weight and relatively low cost but worthwhile unless it'll cost you a fortune in petrol to get there, compared to say Halfords.

I've seen Fuchs at other motor factors too.

I scour ebay for occasional bargains.

I got 10 litres of Nissan 10/40 for the princely sum of £8.50 a few months back. Being branded I'd expect it to be as good as any Castrol/Mobil product.

Did you get hammered on postage though Jase?

No because the guy who was selling them lived less than 5 miles from me.

In retrospect, I should have taken the other two he had as well really.

Thanks guys, looks like the Magnatec is getting kicked into the gutter then...

Can anyone tell me what GSF stands for?!?!

German Swedish & French - motor factors specialising in spares for cars from these countries. (But they accomodate the VW clones too).

IIRC Magnatec is regularly on offer at Makro for around £13.
Your local GM dealer will stock a range of oils at very good prices - ask him for a bit of a discount on the marked price and like as not you'll get 10% off.

It's always worth keeping an eye out at Halfords as well. They periodically do half price offers on their own brand oils which I understand are blended by Comma.

At the Mondeo's last service, my local branch were selling 5 litre cans of their own brand 5W/40 fully synth diesel oil at half price (£16 for 5 litres). Almost certainly overkill for this engine, but at that price, who cares? They had semi synths and minerals at similar discounts too. The car's done 8,000 miles on it (2,000 left to go until change time), and it's not even needed topping up yet.
