What ATF [other than Nissan NS1) can I use in the auto cvt box on my 1999 2ltr Primera auto? I had a repair done on it recently [the box] and the company seem to have done an excellent job, but when I asked him had he put NS1 in the box, he told me that what he had put in it he puts in Rolls Royces and that he was sure my Primera would be fine on it. He has given me a 12 month warranty. Just got me thinking...hate being dictated to by maufacturers. If I can put another atf in rather than traipsing up to Nissan all the time it would be marvellous 8-)

After a quick search around the net, it would appear that NS-1 is a different spec to Dexron 3, so I'd be a bit wary running it with standard ATF. Double-check exactly what fluid (brand etc) he used, as it might be compatible. Rolls Royces traditionally have a standard torque-converter box AFAIK, so again that'd raise a concern in my mind.

Did raise a bit in my mind, but they seem like a cool set up. I was thinking on the lines of "if they can use something else so can I." I have always used NS! before when dropping the ATF. The trouble is -what is compatible?

Hi Joe
The CVT in my MkII Punto requires specific CVT fluid from Tutela; the local Fiat dealer wouldn't change it until I had the correct stuff - so not Dexron III, then!
However, I'm not even sure the Tutela would suit your Nissan's CVT ATF. I'm sure Aprilla will give you more detailed (and accurate!) information.

A Rolls-Royce would take regular Dexron III.
A CVT is a bit different because all the torque is transferred via a simple metal-metal contact, so the fluid requirements are a bit different. In a nutshell, NS1 and NS2 are Nissan CVT fluids which are very much like Dexron III, but with improved EP and AW protection. Really you should therefore use NS1 for long life in a Hyper-CVT. I don't think there are any alternatives apart from Nippon Oil's ENEOS range - but that oil would be hard to find. Its just by far easier to go to Nissan I think.

Thank you one and all for your informative replies. It is running really smoothly for the mo', but will probably change the atf a couple of times in the coming months. 8-)
