Hiya guys,
My first post ever on this site.....
well anyway lets get down to what I need to know,
I have a Vauhall Cavalier 2litre Diplomat Its Automatic and after doing a diagnostics test on the mean machine it came back with code 41 So I got that far...Not bad for a female eh? Anyway I have found the meaning to the code it is" Gear error Hydraulic Fault. Usually an internal transmission mechanical failure - Forward Clutch.
where can I get a clutch? I do know that the gearbox is an AF20 will other AF20 clutches work in my car and what other cars have them/>??
This is a toughie for me. I am stuck like the days in school when i couldnt get my head around algibra :-(
any help mucho appriciato lol ;-)
Thanks, Lisa

Unfortuately, getting hold of a clutch pack for an autobox isn't going to do you a lot of good. Unlike a manual, it's an integral part of a complex transmission; fitting it's a specialists job only and that's usually uneconomic. The normal route is a reconditioned autobox.
What's the actual fault and how did you get that very specific diag done. I have transmission code [not engine code?] 41 as:-
"Gear selection - incorrect."
Causes:
1/ Low fluid level;
2/ Shift solenoids 1, 2, or 3;
3/ Transmission ECU.
|
My money is on the selector switch on top of the autobox.
However, some autobox related faults can be cured by a simple fluid change.
I would try changing the fluid first, and if it's still doing it, then I'll see if I can find a post on another forum explaining how to strip down the selector switch, clean, and reassemble it.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your advice but I have already done that.
Thanks tho :-)

Hiya
it was the autobox transmission test that i did by shorting pins A and C on the EMS diagnostics plug
Not looking good huh?

I'd give the same advice as DD - change the fluid / rebuild the selector switch.
If they've both been done, without success, then try to source a used replacement but you'll have to take a chance whether that's any good.
Autoboxes can be rebuilt but they last so well, particularly the Aisin-Warner (Toyota/Lexus) boxes in Vauxhalls, that the repair cost is probably way over the car's economic value by the time it's necessary.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your advice!! Maybe I should point out that I am going to be rebuilding the gearbox myself thereofore all I will need to get my hands on is a clutch pack or autobox. The autobox im after is the AF20
I might buy a spare/repair vauxhall 1.8 - 2.2 as they have the AF20 autoboxes in them and so does the calibra and some Vectra's
So I will have to go on from there.
Thanks, Lisa

I've had a quick look to see what this fault is all about.
Cutting a long story short, TC41 is set when the gearbox ECU detects an excessive change in engine speed for a given change in output speed.
There are a fair number of other faults which could give this condition, and unless you have done lots more troubleshooting on this problem than just getting the codes out, I'm fairly sure that you can't be sure that this is a fault in the forward clutch.
One of the really obvious faults which can cause this code to be set is a low fluid level. Remember to check the fluid level with the engine running, in "P", and be sure to use the correct markings on the dipstick for cold or hot checking.
Overhauling one of these gearboxes is not a simple undertaking. You may be lucky, and find a suitable second hand gearbox.

You need to strip / rebuild an autobox in clinically clean conditions as even small particles can block the very small oilways in the signal block.
This ISN'T a job for diy (or most garages), it's a very specialist job - if you want an extreme challenge, good luck.

Anyway after all your support. I changed the autobox last weekend and is working fine.
|
Did you change it or did you rebuild it?
|
I have changed it for another AF20 but since then I have stripped down the old one and its pretty straight forwards
I might rebuild it or hang on to it for spares!!! as i have just got myself a 2litre vectra which has the same autobox.
keeping myself busy this week doing the head gasket and timing belt.
I enjoy it though!
