audi stalling and oil leak - p leigh
Hi, I have a 1998 audi A4 2.4 V6 117000k which I must say I love but recently it has developed this annoying intermittent fault. Sometimes when starting the car wether it be warm or cold it fires up but stalls straight away. I find the fault is slowly getting worse. Just prior to this problem the car had an oil leak which was dripping on the exhaust and was running rough and stalling. I took it to the local garage who cleaned the trottle body out and replaced the rocker cover gaskets on both sides. The car seemed to run fine after this for a short time. Also the oil leak is still present with the smell of burning oil on the exhaust and I now appear to be losing my coolant water.

I wondered if anyone could help with my problem. I am tempted in taking it to a dealer but I have been warned about the hourly rate. ouch!

You'd get it done properly that way. It could work out cheaper in the long run.

Yeh I think your right. I dont mind spending the money on the car as it is a lovely motor. Just nice to know what you might be up against before I take it.

I suspect the dealer cost could be more than the cars value.

Is the immobiliser light on when it stalls?

water in the oil doesnt sound good.

Post up the region you live in, there are good independants out there

;O)

I have just done a search and there is an independent audi specialist in Northwich where I live so gonna give them a call.

cheers for that.

hi there. I have never noticed the immobiliser light on when stalling. the car fires up but cuts out straight away and after 5,6 or 7 attempts it ticks over fine and runs fine.

I dont think the water is going into the oil, i dipped the oil and it looked fine but i am loosing alot. I only do very short distances (a couple of miles to work) but have to top the water up regular.

so your losing oil and water? sounds like a leaky c/h gasket
audi stalling and oil leak - p leigh
well its a strange one. am loosing water somewhere and I have an oil leak from the rear of the engine left hand side which is dripping onto my exhaust which is not pleasent. Its very difficult to see around the rear of the engine as the V6 is one big lump but I read somewhere on the net that the oil seals can go on audi's causing it to drip on the exhaust. I think it refered to the cam shaft seal.

I think if the head gasket is the problem I will be shopping around for a replacement motor, I recon that will be an expensive job which is ashame as the car is in stunning condition with me being the second owner and full history for everything.

where is the coil pack, could be getting soaked with god knows what if its also at the back of the engine!!
audi stalling and oil leak - p leigh
I think the coil pack sits at the front of the engine. when parking up I have never noticed any drip marks anywhere although there is a large engine cover beneath the car. I had the throttle body cleaned out not to long ago. Is the colant supplies to this or around there which could have been disturbed as I cant recall having to top up prior to this.

Hmmm!

the independant will know the problems with these engine setups?
could be a weeping core plug for the water, the oil could be anything.
as milky says and the rest ,dont guess get it professionaly looked at.
se if anybody recommends the independant that you have found,no disrespect but just because he is independant doesnt necessarily mean he knows his job

I think your right. If I had one problem then it would probably be more simple but just my luck to get three faults together.

Thanks for you help guys.
