I have an astra 1.6 1998 running on 2 cylinders. the middle 2 are runing but ouside 2 are not..there is no spark on ouside cylinders from ingnition coil pack..so I bought a new ingition coil pack but no difference..still off two cylinders with no spark..engine management light is burnin steady any ideas....verno
sounds like ecu fault im afraid.needs code reading.
thanks for reply where is ecu situated in the astra any help appreciation..I was worry it was ecu...verno
Have you replaced the HT leads?
no but 2 leads going out together at same time is kida remote....verno
Due to the way these coils are wired,if one goes down,so does it's partner.
its not as simple as that im afraid [ i guess your thinking of replacing ecu ] get it code read before going any further,
why can there be another problem that the ecu is picking up or is ecu faulty...vernon
Is this the Astra F or G? (mk3 or mk4)
Anyway, which ever it is, the following site will provide you with the info to read out the fault codes.
www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm
Not sure if the diagnostic plug is in the fuse box or beneath a removable cover under the handbrake though.
You mention HT leads, so this must be the 8 valve engine then, if I'm not mistaken?
When you replaced the two new sparky coil, did you reset the ECU? It's likely that the ECU still think its faulty. I suggest reset the ECU.
Anyone know how to reset the ECU out there, disconnect battery for a few minutes ??
The ecu will reset itself if a fault is no longer detected. However, a fault code will remain stored in the ecu's memory for a period of time.
guys u r all more than helpfull...I think i'll take it to a diagnostic centre...cause if i dont i'll only put the windshield in with a 5 pound hammer...lol...i'll dissconnect battery for a few mins and see what happens..y is nothing simple nowadays?...verno
verno
These don't need resetting, so read the code before disconnecting the battery. That link tells you how.
This is very likely a failed coil-driver transistor in the ECU. Might just be a circuit fault; but this is quite common.
The best move is to ring somewhere like BBA-Reman and they'll get the ECU picked up and test it. If it's got a transistor gone, getting yours repaired avoids all the security coding hassle of a new, or secondhand, one.
Compared to the later stuff; this is delightfully simple......
I think its a bit late about not dissconnecting batter its been dissconnected for about an hour now..about to reconnect will keep u informed...verno..should eliminate the battery myth...
would love a circuit diagram of ecu unit..would kinda understand it as i'm an electronics engineer..not auto but tv video etc..never read much about auto stuff..but would probably understand circuit ok...i think...
nope dissconnecting battery made no differnce still same with engine management light still burning and still on 2 cylinders...I give up..must go to garage tomorrow...must get some kip..goodnight all...many thanks...verno

nope dissconnecting battery made no differnce still same with engine management light still burning and still on 2 cylinders...
Use the topbuzz link I previously posted to flash up the fault code(s). It won't cost you anything more than a paperclip and less than 10 mins of your time.
Post back the fault codes that get flashed up.
ok will try it now..located ecu socket its under handbrake..will check codes now so i'll take a leave for about 15 mins...verno
ok this is confusing...lol..its works ok but i may be readig it wrong..so lets begin
i'm getting 1 pulse then pause then 4 pulses...1 pulse pause then 6 pulses...1 pulse pause 4 pulses...10 pulses pause 3 pulses...5 pulses pause 1 pulse...4 pulses pause 10 pulses...whatever all that means...verno
but i may be reading it wrong
10 pulses pause 3 pulses...5 pulses pause 1 pulse
well that translates to code 0351 = Ignition coil 1 and 4
But I'm having trouble working out the other codes you've posted.
Basically 1 flash = 1, 2 flashes = 2, and so on, but when you get 10 flashes, that = 0. Hence the code above being 0351
yes ignition is down 2 cylinders out but i replaced coil with new one but still same..dont know how to clear codes....verno..at least readig some sense if not its abit like morse code this...a bit of progress tho if i knew how to reset...
verno
It's all a bit garbled; but I was expecting P0351 [Coil A; circuit fault] - and there it is. [10;3;5;1]
P1614 is an immob code - "key not recognized" - could be an old one. No idea on the rest of it.
Do the "clear codes" procedure; try and run it and then re-read what comes back.
i have no idea how to clear code.....verno
its now 3.15 am sunday mornin...lol..
getting nack of this code reading getting pulses 1 6 1 4 and pulses 10 3 5 1...the later i think maybe problem..but it is telling me nothing that i dont already know that 2 cylinders are not firing the question is what is making them not fire..? it sure is not coil pack as new one has been installed...so what is problem..???...verno..(have u ever thought of hari kari)...!
It has to be the ECU I'm afraid.
Check this link out and give these guys a ring as they can repair it for you.
www.bba-reman.com/catalogue/Index.aspx?category=29
According to t'internet, "To clear the codes simply turn on and off the ignition 30 times with a 5 second 'on' gap in-between (time allowed for self check to finish)."
found ecu its beside battery...Astra 1.6 (CNHR)
O.E. Reference
16227049....................but is there driver transistors for coil built into this unit..a bit like line drive on tv sets...true or faulse...verno
verno
Yes, they're in there. Probably clipped to the chassis for heat-sinking. I can probably give you the pin number that the circuit leaves the ECU on if you can identify the car and management system on it. That should give you a chance of following the circuit on the PCB.
1st/ Is this an Astra F or G? ['98 was the change year for the new model.]
2nd/ What's the engine code. C16NZ to Z16XE; about a dozen choices - all very different.
andrew page fix these up in yorkshire
quite cheaply too
thanks bell boy i'll note that...verno

Astra 1.6 (CNHR)
O.E. Reference
16227049.............................usure of engine code but this ecu make is delco electronics gm CNHR 16227049 will look tax book for clues.I've repaired dozens of line drive transisors for tv's and also worked on surface mount on amature radio like replacing sm caps transistors etc..its just that i aint into auto stuff (yet)....the pin numbers would help ..I also can check condition of trannys with oscilloscope...verno...
Astra F or G? CNHR is not an engine code and an OE parts ref is only for dealer use.
I know.. This is the ecu number that is on ecu.. the astra is 1998 LS...dont see any engine code in tax book..is it wrote in engine compartment...and where..verno
tried this 30 times switch on does not seem to work still getting error codes plus dash management lamp still burns....verno
tried this 30 times switch on does not seem to work still getting error codes plus dash management lamp still burns....verno
This will only clear logged faults that are no longer being detected. The fact that the ECU light is still on means a fault is still present. Have you tried reading the fault code since 30 switch on / offs?
Also, you've been asked a couple of times whether your Astra is an F or G model - but you've still not mentioned which.
sorry guys i have no idea if its an f or g all i know is thats its 1998 1.6 8v ls the ecu is to right of battery..its northern ireland reg...cant see any f or g in tax book donno where to look in engine compartment..and the fault code 0351 is still present even after reset..along with 0443..i think this fuel...tank nearly empty due to testing...verno
must attach oscilloscope tomorrow to inputs of of coil pack this might tell me somethin...verno
correction the ecu is to right of battery...verno
date of first registratio is 18-05-1998 if thats any help...verno
definatley G...many thanks for photos....lol...verno
This is an Astra G with an X16SZR engine. The part #of the engine control unit is as reported 16227049.These were notoriosly unreliable due to corroded components on the pcb.GM offered a free replacement up to 6 years or 60k miles.New Ecu is not too expensive ,about £160 but will need coding to car.hth
thanks for info but had ecu apart and no sign of corrosion..however am about to check a couple of tansistor tomorrow if they are faulty with component checker attachement to scope..will keep u informed..(cant see any dry joint under magnifier..willchech caps and diodes as well....verno.....
had ecu out today took it apart...lot of sm tech..but there are 2 transistors ref q6 and q8 attached to front heatsink are these the driver transistors for coil..havnt checked em yet for faults...verno...
