Audi A4 2.0 TDi fuel cons - Roly93
I have a new A4 2.0 TDi 140 and was wondering what other peoples experience was with fuel consumption. Specifically what mileage is needed before the fuel consumption normalises. Mine has done 1000 miles so far and motorway fuel consumption is still stuck at about 42 mpg. My old 1.9 TDi 130 woul;d have been doing about 49-50 on the same journeys.
How many more miles will it take to loosen this engine ?

Roly, I have the Passat 2.0TDi 140 and I found the fuel consumption in the low to mid 40s for first few thousand miles. At about 6k the engine loosened up noticeably and consumption improved, especially on long runs. A recent 1500 mile trip to NW Scotland with full load gave me 700+ miles per tank but I didn't calculate consumption as I'm trying to be less obsessed with it! I estimate 46-48mpg which is pretty good.

Mine has now done 8.5k miles and has used 1.5 litres of oil and I'm hoping this will now stop (like my Audi A4 115 did). How's your oil consumtion or is too early to tell.

Great engine though - loads of real power gives effortless cruising in 6th gear.

These engines have a bit of a reputation for using a large amount of oil initially then 'settling down'. However mine has used virtually no oil so far in 1200 miles. Your answer was as I'd suspected but thanks anyway. My last 1.9 TDi had 10k on it so I didn't experience the running in at the time.

I did 32,000 in my A3 with the same engine. It did about 40 in urban traffic and mid 40s on high speed motorway runs. Best I achieved was mid 50s mpg on a weekend to Norfolk with mile after mile at 50-60 mph.

Just bought BMW 320iSE, 2005 new shape. (Petrol). (8000 miles on clock). Managed to get 51.4mpg on trip from London to Cardiff (150 miles). Travelling at 60-70 mph. Makes you wonder why go for diesel. Although I know it will be a lot more thirsty around town.

Congratulations Roly - great choice, and I hope you enjoy it. I agree with the above, and the further good news is that not only does fuel consumption improve with mileage, so does performance. I've found that a lot of diesel engines don't give of their best for up to 10,000 miles.

Is yours a manual or an automatic? I think Audi still uses the multitronic CVT ( which I had on my 2.5 TDI and was excellent, with very little extra consumptopn accodring to the statistics). Other VAG cars with this engine use the DSG transmission which i haven't tried yet.

Does anyone have experience of how long will it take for my A4 2.0 TDI to improve its fuel consumption ? I have done 1500 miles so far and still struggle to get 43 mpg on a motorway run, when I would have got 50-51 mpg from my old 1.9 TDi. Your experiences with this engine please.

Thanks Davey, I must be getting senile, I'd forgotten I'd started that thread !

Although it's not the same engine, my S-Max delivered 42 MPG (true, not fuel computer) on it's first brim-brim tank. It's now done 3300 miles and it's now getting about 45MPG.

I still expect it to get better until about 10,000 miles.

Hope that helps.

Roly have a look at my thread on discussion.

In my case it's ENGINE consumption (1 engine per 9,000 miles so far!)

(I think I mentioned in the other thread about economy that my engine seemed to improve at about 8k - now I've got run in another engine)
