MOT Failure? - midlifecrisis
Changed the brake pads on the wife's 02 Fiesta a couple of days ago. While doing so, I noticed that both the driveshaft gaiters (correct name?) were worn and one was split. I'm aware for mechanical longevity they will need to be replaced. However, the car is due an MOT in a few weeks. Will it fail on these. I'd like to get the hassle of the mot out of the way before I sort the car.

Yes.

I second Pug. Plus change them asap. One bit of grit in there and bye-bye joint.

outer split boots are a failure, i would buy some quality boots, the cheap ones seem to crack up , and i would replace the pinchbolt on the suspension arm while your there , theyre cheap enough at fords/factors.

Yes, to be pedantic, only the one which is perforated or split is a failure item.

Depending upon your attitude to the maintenance of your wife's car, you might prefer to replace the joint on the side where the joint has split, because there's almost certainly some grit in there. You may be lucky, and the joint may go on to last for years - or you may be unlucky, and be posting questions on the forum about knoking noises on corners in a few months' time.

My view is to prefer to do a job once, and do it well, and know that I don't need to go there again for some time. As CV joints for Fiestas are cheap, I would fit one, and be done.

Isn't that backwards way round? Sort the car and the MoT won't be a hassle.

Time factor and my utter very poor mechanical abilities. (Brakes pads and oil are my limit). I'd get them done at the same time as the MOT, but I'm always wary that they would find 'extra' work. What's the likely damage for a garage to change the two. (The car is likely to be sold soon to make way for a bigger vehicle, so don't want to be spending big bucks)

Delete the 'utter' in the paragraph above and it might actually make sense!! :)

About half to 3/4 of an hour for each side - the rubber boots themselves aren't hugely expensive.
