hi, what could be the reason for the revs to drop from about 950rpm to 500rpm when i put the lights or the heater blower on full, faulty alternator or battery or both?

It happens. On some cars its perfectly normal.

well its never has happened on any car ive ever had..
so i would so no its not normal
if i put on the air/con lights stereo heating etc the revs drop "slightly" then the system picks up again and returns to "normal"

sometimes a little bit too much opinion....but its only because i care !!!

It would help if we had some details of the car, this is normal for a Hispano Suiza.

It happened on nearly every car I had that didnt have electronic engine management. Ie a carb, spark plugs and mechanical distributer.

Hello
Is this the 1.1 Fiesta or the 1.0 Fiesta if so they both have electronic Distributerless ignition systems.

I don't think the type of ignition system makes much difference.
My Grandads old 1.3 Escort gives a rev drop, but not as much as yours. Idle speed is about 1000rpm & it drops to 750 if something significant is switched on.
It depends on what sort of idle speed control system it has. I think some sophisticated carbs have an idle control system but not all.

its a 1.1 fiesta {Added to subject header - DD} with (dis) distributorless ig syst
|
Some of these were fitted with a device called a "throttle kicker" to return the idle speed to normal to compensate for the increased load.Basically a solenoid that was energised when lights or HRW were on.
|
Although a slight drop in idle speed may be normal for some cars (especially smaller engines IMO), I would say there is something wrong if it almost halves the idle speed. 950 rpm seems a little high and 500 rpm is quite low. Maybe there is an underlying fault and someone has increased the off load idle speed to compensate.
