We have a 2001 Citroen Xsara 2.0i 16v (137 bhp) which on occasions doesn't run quite as it should. Sometimes it is fine, but on other occasions there seems to be a hesitancy. For example when in 3rd gear if you put your foot down there will be a hesitancy around 3000 rpm for a few seconds, then ok, then the same at 4000rpm. It is also the same when at crusing speed on the motorway if you accelerate in 5th.
As I say, sometimes it is completely fine. The local garage have said they can do a diagnostic check, but my fear is that is it seems to be an intermitent problem that they won't find anything.
Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Many thanks

map sensor under the manifold is contaminated with oil

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I'm guessing as you sound so confident that this may be a common problem... Any idea of costs etc to get this solved- I am very non mechanical! Is there anything that can be done to prevent this in future?
Thanks Injection Doc!

Have not had a chance to look any further into this, but... would the MAP sensor need replacing, or would it be possible to clean it. If it needs replacing any ides of costs etc and is it something that an amateur (me) could do or is it best left to the experts?
They may be stupid questions.........
Cheers All!

Evening people,
I was wondering if anyone could advise whether I would need to replace the MAP sensor. I have read various other forums which suggest this is a common fault due to the position if the part. I guess it can be cleaned, but what with? Would WD40 help, or make matters worse?!
I thought I would try and take a look tomorrow with a friend who is a trainee mechanic and would greatfully recieve any advice... Many thanks.

Hi sorry for not getting back sooner, 4-5 years ago I remember having one in whilst still under warranty & at the time the dealer couldn't find the fault & seemed to remeber it had a sensor tucked under the inlet manifold facing upwards, it was a fiddle to change but assuning you have checked the obvious and you dont have a misfire under initial load I would look at this sensor. If you find a local garage that has diagnostic gear they should be able to plug in whilst you drive & check the reponse of live data, & trace as to wether the map sensor is lazy! it wont show as a fault it will only show as a delayed reading. I don't bother washing them out but you could try. When I repair a car I have to garrentee the work so I would rather replace otherwise it only comes back

Had same model with same fault, answer to your question is yes change the map sensor you should be able to get a non dealer one from most car shops for around £20.00, mine was located top right on side of head, do change the oil as well and filters, the reason the sensor has failed is probably down to poor maintenance, the cutting out problems you have described point me in that direction as my car used to do the same, it's not a big job someone with minimal mechanical skills should sort it in 10 minutes or so, remember to flush engine clean and change oil/air filters before fitting new map sensor.
Hope this helps...

Hi there,
Finally got round to having the new Map sensor fitted. Unfortunately it hasn't done the trick and I am still experiencing the same problems. How important would it be to change the oil and filters etc. These were done about 1800 miles ago.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated!!
Many thanks,
Nick

Hi there,
Didn't get a response to the post above originally. Any ideas from anybody now? The Map sensor was an original Citroen part.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks.
