my dad recently bought a 03 plate 406 hdi with 50k on the clock. He upgraded from an x reg with 140,000. The mpg has dropped from around 48mpg on the x reg to under 40 on the new one. He told me the engine has more go in it and feels quite 'tight' still as hes run in plenty of new cars.

I was wondering if the mpg will increase with more miles and if theres anything that can be done to get the most out of his fuel like changing to fully synthetic oil etc?

He does around 35,000 miles a year so it makes a big difference to the fuel bill.

cheers

I would have thought it would have been well run in at 50K. Under 40 seems very low for that engine, assuming it is with an even mix of urban and extra urban motoring.

Thanks for asking but we don't have it any longer. I sold it in May of last year, when we bought a Swift automatic for my wife. I am a bit disappointed not to have had any feedback from the chap who bought but he seems to have disappeared into the mists of time.

Compared to the car he had (another Xantia) ours was in wonderful condition. I had just spent £500 to have the car serviced and to get it through its MOT test, for which it needed new spheres and rear brake discs. I had planned, initially, to replace it at the end of last year but we stumbled across the Swift, which was just the car my wife was looking for. I do miss the Xantia though, for its ride and handling.

I have that engine in a much lighter car (307) and I see 55mpg on non-motorway X-country driving.

I did better than that as an average when I fetched the XM from Glasgow using the Xantia. I think it needs checking over.

That's quite a drop between identical cars. Might be worth getting a diesel specialists to give it the once over.

It's a general problem; these latest-generation "clean" engines are causing a lot of complaints about poor MPG. Emission improvements don't come without a cost. Some current mid-range diesels [Hondas etc] are struggling to get into the 40's at all. Pretty much level with the petrols now.

Don't think this one should have a FAP on it; but if it has, [and figuring-out what/when/why PSA fits anything is beyond me] then there's your explanation.

Definitely a problem - over the last 14000 miles (15 months mixed driving) I've averaged 38mpg in my Synergie HDI 110, which has the aerodynamics of a brick and weighs 1.8t.

Yes, same here. My 50K C5 HDI 110 does about 43MPG. It only gets better on a long run i.e. all motorway jouney.
